So we just got back last week from Los Angeles, and I am 2 weeks out from spending a week with the in-laws (all of them) in Myrtle Beach.

What the heck is there to do in Myrtle Beach? I've seen the visitor's information web site and all that, but it seems to be 4 things there:
1) Beach (duh)
2) Fishing (no thanks)
3) Golfing (nope, can't golf so I won't do it)
4) Tourist trap stuff (Ripley's things everywhere, and such)

The amusement park, water park, and things like that are pretty small for our family (the heck with the in-laws, they can figure their own stuff out ), the zip lines are over some empty lot (lame).

So far, I think that we will find some pier or two to go down to if they have any interesting street performers, walk the boardwalk, hit the beach/pool, and my family will probably want to hit one of the shopping areas.

I plan to take some of my kites along, but unlike this guy I don't have a buggy, so I may only mess with my smaller kites to prevent too many face plants on the beach due to winds (the big kite pulls HARD in almost no wind).


Anything else to do?

I keep thinking that one of these days someone from here will actually live near a place I am visiting and invite me over, but I think people are scared of us Iowans...

I've only been to Myrtle Beach once, to see my wife's cousin sing in the Five Irish Tenors show at the Palace Theatre. It was a couple of years ago, and the show doesn't run there anymore. It was a brief trip, and we ate and stayed at places that weren't particularly memorable.

Anyway, I don't think there are any "Must Do" things there, but, in general, you can't go wrong at a beach. Whatever you do there is gonna be fun. Enjoy!

I will burn pretty badly if I am at the beach too long, even with sunscreen. My wife and kids are fine to just sit there for days on end. Maybe a lot of walking around and just relaxing. It usually takes me about 3-4 days of going nuts because there is nothing to do before I realize that it is OK to have nothing to do.

You need drugs? I got drugs.

I've got plenty to do, but I usually end up doing nothing instead. Then later I look at what I've done, and wish I had done something.

Do you have any drugs for that?

I spent 2 spring breaks at Myrtle with not just the in-laws, but the extended in-laws as well! We mostly BBQ'd, played cards and enjoyed the beach. Rent some kayaks or boogey boards if the waves are good. The aquarium there was pretty good too in the tourist trap area. Hope that helps. With Medic8r's help I might even survive a 3rd trip as certain family members bring the idea up once in a while.

1. A day trip to the beaches at Pawleys Island. Much nicer than MB.
2. Brook Green Gardens, just south of MB.
3. A day trip to Charleston (where I live), about 2 & 1/2 hour drive. Walk around Meeting Street, Market Street, East Bay Street. Take a horse and buggy tour of the historic district. Walk Battery Park. Have oysters at Pearlz or the Noisy Oyster. Eat dinner at FIG or Husk or SNOB or Peninsula Grill or Hymans.

As far as actually doing stuff in MB, don't have your expectations up too high and just relax and enjoy your vacation.
