Anyone know how to cut 1 1/4" OD metal drain pipe without buying a $150 pipe cutter? I have a new sink drain that has a pipe that is alternately too short (without the little ziggy zag adapter) or too long (with the ziggy zag adapter). The trap and pipe to the wall is cast iron, and the sink is a pedestal style that is caulked to the floor and wall. Needless to say, the only part I want to move is the new drain.

A reciprocating saw would be my first choice. A hacksaw would also work. There's also a flexible trap adapter that might be an option for you.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about with the plastic zig zag thing. I think I'll try the hacksaw, then maybe the dremel. I don't have a reciprocating saw, so...

Fortunately, there seems to be a lot of wiggle room with how long I cut the pipe, since I've got that trap adapter.

Ken, cutting iron with a dremel will be a pain, is it a time sensitive item? if not, then you could call a CNC machine shop they should have a metal cutting bandsaw. This would give you the cleanest cut.

I would guess a machine shop would cut the pipe for pretty cheap for you.

Having a sawzall around is never a bad thing.. I bought the biggest one Milwaukee makes, and use it for ALL kinds of random stuff around the house.

A hack saw will work, but you will have a worn out arm when your done. smile

No, this is the brass pipe that came with the drain plug--quite thin. Not doing the iron pipes!

You'll have no problem cutting the brass with a hacksaw. I'll second the idea of having a sawsall on hand. It's one of the most versatile tools in my collection.

I like my Sawzall more than my chainsaw... Probably because i get to use it quite a bit more, and don't have to be as careful with it...

Ken,
when you said Metal, and said it joined to a Iron pipe i though you were staying with Iron. If you have a vice, put the pipe in the vice when you use the hack saw, this will allow you to get the best possible cut given the tools at hand. Also, if you use the vice method, cut as close to the end of the vice as possible. This will allow you to use the end of the vice as a guide.

Thanks for the vice advice. I do have one, but I haven't attached it to the bench that's covered with junk yet. I guess I have another project for today. wink

Already bought a new pair of pliers for this one. Hoping to keep it to just that.
