It was time to do a re-watch of one of my favorites, Freaks and Geeks. The news for a Blu-ray release came out in July, but I somehow didn't hear about it until last night, when I saw the preorder on Blu-ray.com.

In reading the thread about the release, I saw that they were able to go back to the 35mm film. I also found out that the they've switched out what's on Netflix from the SD 4:3 to an HD 16:9 version. I imagine it's coming from the same source as the Blu-ray. Purists may have a point about the framing of the shots having 4:3 in mind, but I tried out the first episode last night, and so far it's not bothering me.

I'll buy the new Blu-rays, even with Netflix being almost there in quality. And I'll buy a UHD Blu-ray set if that happens, too.

Anyone have any strong opinions on the BD releases of of the real Star Wars movies? I'm kinda giving up on getting my hands on the 2008 releases with the laserdisc rips, since they're running around $300 on Amazon. So oh well.

Might as well get HD even if it does have the new stupid stuff in.

We've again started watching the 6 Star Wars Blu-Rays last night with the first one - Episode IV. I had forgotten how good the remastered soundtrack is on this one.

It's become a tradition here around this time of year leading up to the Holiday Season...

Thought I would mention the iconic score from John Williams sounds very good on the bluray release. Pretty good dynamics and very robust orchestral sound. A surprise for sure -having seen it a ton of times on a TV alone when growing up.

The Leftovers

It was the season finale tonight. If you have access to HBO and haven't tried it out, it's worth it. Some of the ideas are a bit loose, but that's where some of the fun comes in. It's nice to see how out-there they can take the story sometimes.

Rise of the Guardians.

The movie itself is Ok, but the 7.1sound mix is exceptional. If you are wanting to justify a 7 channel setup, this one is it. Hard panned sounds to the rear channels in more than a few scenes. Frequent use of surround channel pans around the listener. Very impressed with the sound design in this one. Worth buying just for the sound aspect.

Finally broke into the Twilight series bluray that the wife got LAST Christmas.
Yes it takes that long to sit down and watch a movie these days with all the evening and weekend flurry of activities.

The interesting thing was seeing the AVR go into a mode i had not seen before (or in a VERY long time). Instead of the Dolby D coming up across the LCD panel, something else lit up; the DTS logo.
I hadn't heard any disc of ours in ages in DTS. One thing i noted that i didn't like (whether this is specific to these discs or not) was just how much of the dialogue was coming entirely from the centre channel without any dispersion to the left and right channels. I'm going to take more close observations in the next movie to see if this changes as a character moves left to right on the screen.
I'm also going to gloss over the settings in the AVR.
