Since my display is only a 1080i display, i can not take advantage of the BDP-105 just yet. So, i sent my 83 in to get the upgraded Special Edition DA chips.. I just got it hooked up, so i don't have an initial opinion...
Does anyone else have an 83SE?

The 103 has the same audio and video with the HDMI so I'm going with it.

Since you're following the thread, and something like this is just about impossible to search for, do you know if the DTS Neo:6 in the 105 does 5.1 to 7.1 up-mixing? The manual refers to stereo-to-7.1 but no mention of what it does to 5.1 sources.
I'm thinking about getting a 105, 7 channels of power amps, and doing away with a receiver entirely. It's got an HDMI input for my PS3, and does volume control, channel trims, bass management, and distance compensation; that's all I need from a receiver.

man, i honestly don't know about the 5.1->7.1 up mixing....
there is a comsiderable amout of interest in going directly from the player to amps.. that is a pretty popular topic...

What is, "Our House"?
I'll take "1980s One Hit Wonder Songs" for $600, please, Alex.

man, i honestly don't know about the 5.1->7.1 up mixing.... I contacted Oppo directly, alas they said that it only works for stereo sources. Not a deal breaker, but a bummer, because the way my room is set up, without the rear channels, there seems to be a hole in the surround field. I'll keep thinking, and maybe the 115 will be out by the time I make up my mind, with every last feature I can dream about.

Nice work, JP.
Chris, I was only half-kidding. I'm not at all comfortable with doing all the switching and processing in the player. I hate having to shift my paradigm.

Chris, that's a bit surprising(assuming that the Oppo rep was correct)since both DPLIIx and Neo:6 make expanding 5.1 to 7.1 a major feature. The receiver manuals typically state that the DPLIIx and Neo:6 modes are for expanding "2-channel" sources to 7.1. Then however, they have separate modes such as Dolby Digital + Neo:6 and DTS + Neo:6 specifically for expanding 5.1 sources to 7.1.

The paradigm I like to follow is, "do one thing very well", but since the rest of the world is shifting from that, it's becoming, "do everything the best." Too bad no one is living up to that either.
