Hypothetical thread for fun. Not saying that all multichannel mixes are done on these, but has anyone ever considered a set of 5 powered studio monitors for HT duty. Hypothetical Killer budget system existing avr as Preamp <1000$ Mains and Center 8" Mackie mr8mk2 220 each (sold as single) Surrounds 5" Mackie mr5mk2 150$ each (sold as singles) Axiom subwoofer They accept unbalanced RCA connects. Easy enough. I have listened to the 5" versions as a desktop option. They sound fantastic and are very powerful, but are large. They also have very good bass output for their size. The 8" would be knarly! The monitor cost before a sub would be around 1000$ and would have roughly 600W power. Real power. I mentioned this in another thread as an alternative to pro audio amps. They are also built like tanks and would likely never have to be replaced. Has anyone considered something like this?

Criterion uses Axioms for their mixing stage.

Keep in mind that there are all sorts of mixing rooms. Music mixing vs. theater mixing, and the type of mixing that each place does (hip hop vs. country as examples).
Most mixing rooms are pretty small. Less than the size of an average living room or home listening space, plus another CRITICAL aspect is that these rooms are treated and good money spent on soundproofing, things that most home users don't touch.
I see what you are going for. If we are trying to simulate what the mixers intended, then why not duplicate their equipment, but again, the room becomes the issue at that point.
Lastly, I know that some mixing studios are larger, and such, but many are as I described above. Oh, and as Chris mentions, they don't all use the same brand or model of speakers.
Sorry, not trying to burst the hypothetical thread bubble.

My point is kinda both. Get very good literal "reference" quality sound at a very affordable price. Hypothetically. Mackie was just an example but Yamaha, JBL, Behringer, Genelec etc could be substituted of course. Of course, the design of studio monitors is intended for mixing, but in that lies their strength for reproduction, within limits of course. Some are less likely to sound the same out of a nearfield environment. I know some popular home speaker brands across the pond were born from a studio product beginning. Leema Acoustics springs to mind with their Xero speakers. Axiom makes good speakers, good amps......hmmm. Why not offer a fullrange "wireless" speaker system modelled after monitors? Who wouldn't want to own a pair of "M80 Pros" Say goodbye to amps sound the same/different arguments. We will have to argue about preamps! Ha! Heck, you could just connect them up to multichannel rca outs on a bluray player...... what preamp. Scheming.......

MarkSJohnson mentioned he has the mackie 824s. I wonder if he uses them for HT or studio duty. Mark?

They are used as monitors in my video / audio editing system.... though realistically, they're what I listen to all day because I pretty much live here in my office. Keb' mo' is on at the moment!

I have bi-amped, active reference monitors connected to my PC too, by Alesis. They're incredibly detailed and accurate, just like my Axioms in the living room.
