I have a JVC RX-8020V receiver and I was thinking about investing in a pair of M80ti's.

I know many of you will mock my attempt to power $1100 speakers with a $400 (at the time) receiver , but I just wanted your honest opinions as to whether or not the receiver can do a decent job.

JVC has stopped selling this amp, but there are some details here:

Welcome, RM. You certainly won't be mocked on this board and most of the members probably realize that neither the M80s nor any other speakers know or care how much the amps driving them cost. They just want enough power, and it doesn't matter if the thing delivering it cost $200 or $20,000. I'm not familiar with the 8020, but looking at the JVC site, it claims that 4 ohm loads can be driven. From past experience there are actually very few receivers that shut down with 4 ohm speakers. You'd probably have excellent sound with that combination.

I agree with John, with two additions:
1. You won't know until you try, and
2. m80s are considered an "easy" 4-ohm load (never below 4, about a 5.5 average I believe) which should help.
3. m80s are very efficient, which should also help with a potentially borderline receiver.

make sure you're not purchasing M80s just to have the biggest tower axiom makes. you should purchase speakers that 'match' your room.

Let me second metalaaron's comment. Have you spoken to the Axiom folks about room dimensions yet. The 80s are nice, but need a big room to breathe properly. The 60s work just about anywhere and they don't give much up to the 80s.

As far as the receiver goes, it will likely work. If not, wheteher Axioms or something else, there are plenty of receivers out there to choose from.

Actually, I was going to get the M80's because they were the top of the line. :-)

My room dimensions aren't particularly big. The speakers will be going in a room that is about 12' x 20'.

Do the M60's really sound as good as the M80's?

The 80s get a bit lower and can play a bit louder. The QUALITY of the audio is pretty close. You don't give much up with the 60s Have you checked to see if there is anyone nearby who can provide an audition?

Also, and this is just me talking, a 12x20 room might be a tad small for the 80s. Assuming that you have an 8' ceiling, your room is 1920 cubic feet. The 60s are recommend for 2000-6000 rooms. The 80s are recommended for 4000-8000 cubic feet. All things considered, the 60s might be your best choice. Easier to drive, a bit less expensive and REALLY great audio. I don't think you would miss the 80s one bit.

I have to agree with Ray3 here. Of all the not-top-of-the-line Axiom speaker owners on this board, the people who own the M60s are somehow immune from ungrade-itis. This is a very important fact as it indicates complete satisfaction.

Unless your room is cavernous, you won't be missing anything by purchasing M60s. They're cheaper, they're easier to position, they don't require as much current, and they sound damn near identical to M80s. If you do like strong low bass, even an M80 owner would recommend augmenting your system with a quality subwoofer.

So you would all recommend the M60's over similar offerings from Paradigm? I have a buddy who swears by Paradigm.

Let me put it this way. I used to think Paradigms were amazing for the price -- I use to own Monitor 9s. I own Axioms now.
