Ok, the pastor of our church is asking me, since I do desktop/software support at work, if this would be possible. I am not an apple guy, but he is, so here goes. I am also open to other ideas, but we don't have much time or other equipment.

There is a funeral on Monday which we are anticipating might be large. We have a somewhat smaller church which will accommodate about 300 people in the man sanctuary. We have another room off to the side, near the entrance that can hold another 60 or so.

We would like to stream live footage to a larger lcd tv in that other room in case we are full. Since he is an apple guy, we have 2-3 newer iPads, he has an iPhone, and we have Apple computers, as well as Apple TV module.

I have read you can stream using the Airplay app on iO/S devices to Apple Tv as the iPad and iPhone would use the video camera.

My main questions are has anyone attempted this, and is the quality decent? Also, any thoughts on the range (distance) this can be transmitted? We have some options on where we can set the devices to reduce the distance, but need to check.

I don't think we want to go purchase any new products, so hoping we can either use, the ipad, iPhone, or Apple computers (assuming they have webcam, they should as expensive as they were).

Quick thoughts would be helpful as we don't have a lot of time. I plan to go to the church tomorrow AM and do some testing...

Thanks Randy

It's only a single stream; you won't be able to do multiple cameras. The question is what software to use. I think you'll want Airplay mirroring, probably off of the iphone. That's going to have the best camera. You may be able to mirror the camera app or something like photo booth, but as I don't have an AppleTV, I'm not sure how possible that is.

EDIT: Here's what you need to do: http://lifehacker.com/5867058/use-airplay-to-watch-your-iphone-4s-camera-on-apple-tv

It's swipe to the left twice (ie, get to the controls, rather than the app list), but other than that, this should do what you want.

Be sure to use the rear camera on the iPhone.

Yeah, I think as long as both devices connect to our church wifi, it appears there would not be a distance issue. When you say rear camera, I assume your talking about the rear of the device, not the one facing the user. smile Should I toe the device in slightly smile

Yeah, the rear of the device. And yes, make sure you toe it in, and use premium wifi.

I'm old. I've done this sort of thing many times, but I had used video cameras, mics, switchers and remote monitors (which, back in the day, were called TVs by lay people).

well looks like you can stream live video footage using the camera, however, audio won't stream. Sure a recorded video works, but this is for live transmission. I found a few mic apps on itunes, but I just found out you can't run multiple apps at the same time with Apple o/s, that sucks. I sure love my Android for this ability.

We may just have to use the mic out on the mixing board in the AV area, and use a wireless transmitter/receiver setup as Mark hinted. I suppose a baby monitor would work to, lol.

Well I think we have a solution that is working pretty nicely. We are using Ustream to stream from an newer iPhone sitting on a tripod with a nice view of the worship space. This is done using wireless to the apple router and then out to the internet. Then, we are launching Ustream on the iPad to view the live footage with about a 10sec delay is all. We then launch Airplay on the iPad that to mirror that to the Apple TV in the other space.

Surprisingly the audio and video work nicely, with minimal delay...

Ustream is pretty cool.

ps: also works on Android smile
