I'm not exactly a newbie to the hi fidelity realm but I've owned a sub for less than a year. In reviews of different sub brands, even on the EP350 which I own, I keep hearing about "Port Chuff" as a form of distortion. Can anybody define for me what exactly it is and how I can identify it on my current set up?

Crank up something with a lot of bass and stick your head near the port (hole) on your sub.

If you can hear the air coming out of the port, it's chuffing...

Checked out the EP350 using the Finding Nemo dvd. Sounded okay - felt a lot of wind but heard nothing matching the description above. No brown noise either although, if I had turned the reciever up louder when Darla was tapping the tank, there might have been ...

The responses so far have the definition of port chuffing covered, more of less. During loud bassy scenes, you'll always feel wind if you have your face near the port. It's only when the port starts to add sound of its own -- acting like a trumpet of sorts -- that if becomes a problem.

What happens is that the air entering the port undergoes some compression and then becomes highly turbulent once it exits on the other side. Flaring the port is supposed to significantly reduce this turbulent effect.
