Hi;

I have a set of AX5 reference monitors. I also have a chance to get some used axiom speakers to build a "home theater" in my living room.

The question is~~ would an EP175 subwoffer be a good match in a room that is 20+feet by 15+feet in an open floor design or do I need the EP350 ???

I'm sort of thinking that the 10 inch rear drivers in the AX5's will help the EP175 and negate the need for the larger subwoffer. The additional speakers are w150 centre, QS8's on the side and M22's for the rear speakers.

Thanks, cheers Orca

With the 30 day in home trial why not try one out?
Pretty good chance you'll want 2.

I'm going to rephrase the above post...
After messing around with multiple subs in varying layouts in many small rooms I found I preferred the tactile,involuntary, grin creating feel from many subs playing nicely together.

Thanks brwsaw;

I'm sotra thinking along the same lines. As I said the AX5's have 10 inch drivers and if I were to put the ep175 in the center of the rear wall I'd get a well balanced effect.
I realize the ep175 is rather small and from what I've been reading in the forums lots of people are using much bigger subwoffers in an even smaller space. However, I'm not trying to build a real "home theater", I just want good surround sound for my TV and clear clean sound for my music. After all I'm a septuagenarian and quiet, good quality, sound is what I really want.
cheers, Orca

Yep, that's been my goal to. That and balancing low volume playback with the higher output my friends and family expect from the experience. I'm there now and loving it.

I've had EP175, EP350, EP500 in a room a little smaller than that. You need at least the EP350.

I have a room that size with M80's, vp150, QS8's and a EP350. The one area I think I would have gone up one level is the sub, to at least the 500.

The sub is good, no question, but when I want "more" bass, it is just not there....

Thanks Mike;

I hear ya :~)

However, in that case I think I'd have to get the VP160.

Cheers, Paul

I am not sure that the 160 will enhance the overall bass. I had the AX3 models, a slightly smaller version of your AX5's. The M80 is vastly superior to those models, and a good sub was needed for extra "oomph".

I would say try the 175 if you feel it will be enough, and you have 30 days to return for something bigger - like the 350 or 500

My HT was set up in a 19' x 23' x 8' room laid out width-wise with M80's, VP150, 4 - QS8's, and an EP500. There was enough bass, but it wasn't even enough, so a second EP500 was really called for for that size room. Some here would probably argue that 4 subs would be best. The center channel was the weak link in my setup but it was the biggest Axiom carried at the time.
I've already traded in the VP150 and will get a VP160 or 180 (or whatever is the latest and greatest when I order) when I finish the basement here. I will probably get a second sub, too, even though the new HT room will only be 20 x 14.5 laid out length-wise.

The EP175 will be OK for most music, but not much use for movies. It does sound like that is what you are looking for.

I agree, the EP500 can handle more bass. But for a minimum, I'd use the EP350. I've used both, and I've maxed the 350 out in some movies, such as TRON Legacy at higher volume.

I did it.
I ordered an EP350, a VP160 and a pair of QS8's to go with my AX5 reference monitors.
Thanks for all your advice, I'll post in a month or so to let ya all know just how happy I am :~)

Cheeers, Orca

Holly molly ~~~~~ Sorry folks but I'm having so much fun with my New/Old Axiom speakers I just didn't have time to report back smile
My Ax5 reference monitors paired super duper with my new Axioms. I've been listening to many of my old classic cd's as well as new Blu-ray concerts ~ what great sound ~ should have done this years ago.
Such a shame my AX5's were put away for over 12 years frown
But right now everything is great.
So if any of you reading this is wondering whether or not it is worth doing something similar ~~ go for it !!!
Oh and did I mention Movies ~~ with my new LG OLED I will not be going out to any old movie house for a long time. Watched "Inception" ~ thought I was "in" the avalanche the sound was so real!!

AXIOM ~~~~ thanks for such great products smile

Cheers Orca
