After doing several searches online, I'm still no farther ahead as to whether the newest 4K/UHD TV's require the latest 2.0 hdmi cables or if the 1.4's are sufficient. I haven't bought a new TV yet but would like to ensure that if I go to the UHD's I'll have the cable compatible (inwall). Some people say you require the 2.0, others not... anyone know?

My HDMI cables are rated for 4k and 3D. They're way too old to be 2.0.
The rating isn't posted online, couldn't say what model/designation they should have.
I thought they weren't giving them numbers anymore???
If I was purchasing a new TV , produced this year, I'd try for the 2.0 cable because, as I understand it, new DRM policies and new (2015 and newer) equipment will require them.
Most here would suggest Monoprice because of their prices. No doubt their cables will likely do the trick.

Adrian, the HDMI 2.0 specifications relate to hardware, not connecting wire, and there's no such thing as a "2.0 cable". The HDMI organization itself makes this very clear in its FAQs on the topic and states that existing "High Speed" cables satisfy the requirements of 2.0 spec devices.

BlueJeans also discusses the topic well here .

A seller purporting to offer(in violation of the HDMI organization)a "2.0 HDMI cable" is either unaware of the technology or is being intentionally deceptive. Existing High Speed HDMI cables from reputable sources such as BlueJeans and MonoPrice are available at reasonable prices.

Thanks, John. I found several links basically reinforcing what you are saying. What I'm seeing though, are various claims on how many gbps are required for 4K and are able to pass through the cable...many are 10.2gbps which seems quite common if even listed, others are 18 which some people say is necessary for 4K and I even saw a manufacturer/seller claim their cable was capable of 25gbps. Is the 10.2 sufficient for future proofing? that seems to be the question.

I use redmeer cables from monoprice and they are very thin and flexible and work great. I have a 25ft cable I use with Dirac and it works great hooked to my computer and the XMC-1.

Adrian, as the two linked sources indicate, the HDMI 2.0 specs provide for bandwidths up to 18 Gbps and place the entire burden for handling it on the hardware devices, not on new cables, since the hardware is required to operate with existing High Speed HDMI cables. In particular, from the HDMI organization: "Can Existing HDMI cables support the higher bandwidths of HDMI 2.0 Specification?

Yes, existing High Speed HDMI Cables(wire only)will support the new higher bandwidths(up to 18 Gbps).

HDMI 2.0 Specification defined a new, more efficient signaling method, for speeds above 1.4b limits(10.2 Gbps) to allow higher bandwidths(up to 18 Gbps)over existing High Speed HDMI Wire Cables."

Last time I called blue jeans to order a new cable, thinking I actually needed it, I got an education and did not buy anything.
