One thing everyone should keep in mind is that we are not totally free to do whatever we want in terms of features, indicators, and controls. In order to be granted AirPlay certification there is an agonizingly long list of rules and protocols that MUST be followed, otherwise no approval from Apple. In fact, there are over 100 pages of compliance testing requirements!

Thanks,

Andrew

Isn't that similar to getting the old vaunted THX certification?
Or did that just more require paying a bunch of money to them. I don't recall.
Does that even still exist?

Totally agree, Mark. Axiom needs to manage this. Andrew asked so I responded. BTW, the less hardware and bells and whistles, the quicker we'll get it and the longer it will last.

With regard to the gateway, neither me nor my buddies will buy it without the sub out. So we will wait until Axiom includes it.

Andrew, with regard to Airplay, my buddies and I could not possibly care less but I of course can see why the masses care even though it sucks. Spend time and money on hardware robustness and certify Airplay later with a software upgrade if need be.

Airplay certification doesn't require hardware switches, pots and lights BTW. Stick those where they belong - on the GUI.

I'm not sure I see the point of having a sub out connection on a unit which has the primary purpose of being a portable speaker setup. Who would want to also carry around a subwoofer?

Oh, no, he's talking about the small piece of equipment that acts as a source, not the complete system.

Mike, initially I wanted the sub for the deck. Since that time, I've found a place I can use it inside the house too. Now I am looking for a sub. See my post earlier on this thread for specs.

Ken, yes...the sub out is also needed on the gateway.

But it's like hanging the sub off of your DVD player instead of your receiver. You can still control the volume with the web interface (for some godforsaken reason), but if the sub is plugged into the receiver/preamp, then that takes care of matching the levels for the sub and the surrounds.

Ken, one of the primary use cases of the gateway is to modernize a legacy or minimalist receiver - like my Pioneer Elite Air Studios A9 or my buddies' Sansuis from the 80s. These babies don't have a subwoofer output. Hence the need for a sub out on the gateway.

Andrew suggested we run our receivers' speaker outputs to the line level inputs of our subs. I looked at that early on when Ian announced the gateway but the shortest distance for any of us to a suitable sub location is 22 feet. We've talked about it and none of us are keen on running speaker cables that distance. Besides, none of us like subwoofer line level inputs. On top of that, we have nice speaker cables, perfectly terminated, and we don't want to go through the extra hassle and expense of different cables.

So these are our barriers to purchasing the gateway. A subwoofer output would eliminate all those barriers and it would open up the opportunity to buy subs because we currently don't have any for these systems. The subs would have to hit the price point and specs I outlined earlier.

Having a sub out on the Axiom air is an excellent idea for those of us that want to setup a complete System in a room with a small footprint. I love it.
The gateway is a different story but I see Mojo's point. As for Airplay certification I could not care less about it myself but I know the Apple sheep will.
