Avengers: Age of UltronEither something is wrong in my setup, or this disc's audio wasn't mixed right. It seemed like major pieces of the soundtrack were absent. As examples, Iron Man and a jet flying by were nearly inaudible. A jet way later in the movie had more impact, but throughout the movie, it just didn't feel like it had the same presence as in the theater. I stopped early on to run the receiver's level calibration to send noise to each channel and make sure they were all operating, which they were. While the movie was actually playing, I listened to each speaker, and they were all receiving content. I found this poll on High-Def Digest: Poll: The ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Blu-ray Soundtrack ControversyI wouldn't characterize the sound as being awful or lacking dynamics, but rather missing elements. When I've run into this before, it's because I was dumb and forgot to turn on the amp for the mains. Not the case this time, which is what's making me scratch my head. It seems inconceivable that they would mess up a soundtrack this badly, which is why I keep revisiting the idea of something being wrong in my setup. I just can't figure out what when I can't replicate the experience with other material.

I read through a lot of the comments in the AVS review thread. Enough people complained about the sound being off that I'm done investigating my system for problems, but it still seems like most of them aren't quite reaching the same conclusion that I am. Only one guy specifically mentioned the apparent absence of certain sound effects. Everyone else kept talking about lack of punch and dynamics and bass, and half of the people kept saying turning the volume up 10 dB higher than normal fixes everything. It doesn't. I did increase the volume from my usual -12 to -16 to -4 while watching, but that didn't add in sound effects that seemed to be missing. If it was intentional to have a lot of things going on onscreen with no accompanying sound effects, it has to be one of the weirdest choices I've encountered. In any case, I'd like to hear what you guys think when you watch on your home systems.

I watched an abbreviated version of Eric Clapton's 'Slowhand at 70' on PBS from Detroit on Sat night. Unfortunately, it was only in SD (not HD) so the experience was less than ideal. The 2 CH sound routed from my TV into my AVR was weak & flat.
It was a decent teaser as there is a DVD or Blu Ray + 2 CDs package available that Santa might bring me. I'm looking forward to seeing & hearing it in its full glory.
This recent concert in Royal Albert Hall demonstrated that the 'old phart' still has what it takes to make his Fender wail. The audience luved it...

The new season of Fargo seems promising. I keep seeing faces, and I'm like, "Oh, yeah, I do remember hearing they were going to be in this." There are just so many.
I've only watched the first episode even though two are up. I have a friend I'm watching with on the weekend, so I'm being good and saving it. I also started her on The League since it would be silly to just watch one episode of something while she's here.

I'm really looking forward to Aziz Ansari's new series on Neflix, Master of None.

I saw a preview this afternoon for "The Man in the High Castle" on Amazon Prime, and that looks incredible.

I just dug out some old blu rays. Watching the remake of Conan. actually a much better film that the original ones with Arnold. Even if you take into consideration the B movie status.
