Would there be any interest in bigger speakers for surround use with drivers like the Axiom Centre speakers but cabinets designed for mounting high up in the wall/ceiling corner and firing down at a 45 degree angle? I think it might be feasible to build these.

With advanced surround sound via technologies like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, these would seem like somewhat of a "dated" idea. Not saying that the mass population is going to an Atmos or DTS:X configuration, but putting the surrounds up in the corners and pointing them down wouldn't work well with in-ceiling speakers in almost the same audio plane.

Also, when ignoring the newer formats, the ideal placement is down closer to ear height, so while the product could find some usefulness for a few customers for esthetics, I think that the mainstream user would rather have something more sonically accurately located.

With all of that, I do think that it is a cool idea and would hide the speaker location better than on the wall, and heck it would be good for an Auro 3D setup (not that I think Auro 3D is going to get very far), it might not see enough customer need to justify a product creation.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! To be clear though, I am aiming for big, nearly full range surrounds to match my front speakers. Axiom and many other companies sell in ceiling speakers but they in no way come close to an LFR or M speaker in terms of range or power handling. Axiom does not offer an in wall version of an M80 or M100s as far as I know, and mounting an M100 on the wall seems infeasible. The corner mount that I'm suggesting is the only way I can think of to mount such a big heavy speaker as a surround (after all everyone has both a ceiling and a couple of walls in their HT room) and as you pointed out it probably would stick out less up there!
