Over the weekend I went out for grocery shopping as I normally do. The local Walmart had a nice big sign for the TrueTaste milk, on sale for $3.97 for the 3pouch bag. Oh, guess that Nelsion is putting on sale to try and switch people from regular pasteurized to their filtered milk. it does taste different so why not.
What you don't realize is that bag has written in as small as you can get away with that it's now 3L of milk rather than 4L. So the price drop really isn't a drop at all, but actually an increase as you are getting 1/4 less milk for the lower price.
Now that explains why we went through a whole bag of milk this weekend where usually we only get through 2/3rds.

That's common practice these days. They can either raise the price, make it cheaper, or give you less for the same $$. People notice price increases first...

Most companies have done that here, Rather than raise the price everything has gotten smaller. Most people I find would like to pay the extra for the same product rather than the same cost for less.

The scary part about milk is that it is heavily subsidized in many ways. They charge more for the 3.25% homogenized milk, yet there is a glut of it in the system. There has been a vast movement in peoples tastes to 1% or skimmed milk that the amount of milk solids that needs to get sold is causing a problem.
This has come out in the proposed TPP that the industry is worried how they will compete in the market, but I get rather confused as to what it would do to the cost of milk and milk products when it is passed.

Canadian marketing boards need to be abandoned if we want to participate in our 'global economy'.
Paying producers 'not to produce' thus keeping prices artificially high for consumers is protectionist & just plain wrong today. It is a model from the ancient past that needs to go away in all sectors of production, not just food.
I can't believe the amount of power that the dairy industry has over governments in eastern Canada that causes this system to be perpetuated seemingly forever. Out west we have 'The Wheat Board' that is just as bad & archaic.
Then we complain about the OPEC cartel...

You shop based on price per volume. It might be irrelevant if the 3L costs less PER litre than the 4L option. Take a look at no name brand cereal as another example. Many of these once touted as generic, cheaper options to the brand name cereals actually cost the same per volume. The no name brand cereals were sold in larger quantity boxes which made them 'look' like it was a better deal.

Actually very few people drink skim compared to other milk products and it hasn't had a change in trend for 20 years. The highest per capita consumption in order from most to least is: 2% 1% Homogenized Skim (being last) http://dairyinfo.gc.ca/index_e.php?s1=df...smclc#mc-lc-canThe only trend is that Cdn people overall are drinking less milk. I think only the East Coasters and true northerners have the right to bitch about milk prices. http://thechronicleherald.ca/business/1241775-atlantic-canada-milk-prices-among-highest-in-canada
