I currently have M22 fronts, VP150 center and QS8 rears. I run a Denon AVR-991 and when in movie mode I have a Dayton HPSA-1000r amp running a big SVS tube sub. Been thinking of cranking up the power to the components and let the dogs eat. Been looking at hundreds of different posts in different forums on 5 channel amps and stacks of single channel amps. Just thought I'd check in here and see what people are using.

For those speakers in particular most any thing will do. As they are all 8ohm they don't exactly demand hundreds of Watts ie. Stacks of power supply.

Of course you could add power if you want, but they're also quite sufficient with any moderate A.V.R.

The 150 is 6 ohm but yes the rest are 8. You are probably right as they sound amazing already. I just have a problem with leaving well enough alone. Lol

In one sense that it true, but in another it's not. The speakers being 8ohm don't require as much current to drive, so it won't tax the power supply on any moderate A.V.R., however it will generate heat. That is the killer to most receivers. What you need to consider is how often you want to run the unit cranked and the ventilation around your receiver.

I have an infrared thermal sensor gun to measure temperatures (they cost $30 on amazon) to know how hot the receiver or more importantly the boards inside the unit are getting. Rather fun way to spend an afternoon. You will be surprised on how the heat up.

The unwritten benefit to moving some of the amplification out of the receiver is cooling as the less current pulled, the less heat generated so the receiver doesn't cook and hopefully allows it to run far longer. The modern amp fails more than older stuff as the components inside just get too hot and poof. Planned failure as who reads and follows the manual when they say give 12" clearance on both sides and 14" clearance on top (for ventilation space).

I've been using a Denon AVR 981/2311 for about 4 years in my HT setup. It is advertised at 105W X 7 channels - 735W Total.

I found an article about this unit a while ago. HT Labs measured it as follows:

Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 83.3 watts
1% distortion at 91.5 watts

Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 66.3 watts
1% distortion at 74.7 watts

I run most movies at -15 to -10 DB Level & music up to 90 DB SPL in a medium size room. This unit has performed flawlessly & has never clipped nor run out of breath as far as I can tell. Only mildly warm on the top cover. Powered subs of course do the heavy lifting of the lower end that takes the strain off of the AVR. I can only conclude that there is plenty of power available for my usage.

My 5.1(.2?) HT System - M22v4s, VP160v3, QS8v4s & 2XEP800v3s.

Decent AVRs are the best bang for the buck IMO...

Myself when I started my Axiom venture, I was running M22, M3 and vp160 with an Onkyo 525. It was great plenty of power for them no clipping. Then I got M80s{4ohm} noticed some heat in the A.V.R. upgraded to a THX Tascam PA-R200 pro A.V.R. When I went from low end to higher grade A.V.R. there was a noticeable difference $600 unit vs $1500 unit. More dynamic and more details came through that I noticed.

Although I now run my M80s through a hefty Power Amp. With your speakers most of us would recommend you avoid the entry level A.V.R.s although your current A.V.R. is very capable already.
