Hi,
I'm building a 7.1 system. The room is 17x16.
I am wondering if the qs4 speakers would be a good choice or should I go with the qs8 ?? (I need speakers on the sides and back)

Anyone tested those speakers in a room of similar dimension ?

Welcome!
How loud do you listen? What are the other speakers and amplification? Movies or music or both? Love, Actually or Pacific Rim? smile

The center and fronts are of the Paradigm monitor series.
CC390, and monitor 11. The subwoofer is a 14 inch paradigm
The system is mainly used for movies, not for the "love" kind...well maybe 1 or 2 a year...

The amp is a Yamaha RXV-1800, 130W per channel

A coworker of mine put in QS4s into a rather large room (pretty much 50% of his whole basement is wide open), and they do a respectable job even in such a large space.

With that said, they don't go as deep as the QS8s of course, and I think that he could really benefit from the QS8s instead, but he still does alright with QS4. Of the two, I've only had QS8s and really liked them. I don't have them any more as I are stepping into the next realm of home theater sound with Atmos and DTS:X, so I traded them in for some on-wall M3s that I am absolutely loving for accurate immersive sound imaging.

Would on wall M3 be a good fit for the rear wall ?? since the back of my couch is approx. 4' from the wall...
Maybe not so good if I'm staying with DTS-HD for now...

I 'upgraded' from the 4s & the 8s in a medium size room. In the real world, I've heard absolutely no difference in performance.

I suggest that you go with the 4s if price is the deciding factor. Both models do their job exceedingly well & their powered wall mounting system is the slickest out there...

Yeah, a lot of it depends on where your crossover is set. I could see the QS8 and QS4 sounding virtually identical. The QS8 can obviously handle a lot more power, but that is relative as well.

As for the M3 vs QS# question, I loved my QS8s for the many years that I had them, I just knew, from the moment I heard my first Atmos demo that I wanted to have it. Now I am just about a week away from full implementation of it, and it does a lot better with monopole (regular) speakers than a traditionally diffused bi/di/quad-pole speaker (with the QS series being quadpole).

Also, a lot of people, for regular 7.1 setups, prefer monopole speakers (like the on-wall M series) for rear surrounds and QS ones for the sides. You won't go wrong either way in that aspect for traditional 7.1 sound.
