Steve, although I have no right to criticize as I did not order one, I agree with you on this. I was completely shocked to find out all the connections were on the front. The thing is so beautiful, I couldn't imagine having the door open with wires or a flash drive sticking out.

And why is there no independent "master" volume knob? I currently use an Airport Express to stream music into a traditional integrated amp. I set the "max volume" with the dial on the amp, and then use the digital volume on the streaming device for fine adjustments. It works great. (Even my powered M2's have a traditional volume knob.) This would certainly solve (at least temporarily) the "full blast" volume situation that Eric is dealing with currently.

I like the connections up front because usability is improved. Granted the aesthetic appeal is reduced but I always prefer function over form. The design philosophy is inconsistent however because some connections are up front and others are in the back. Given the major use case of the Air is portability, all connections should be up front to allow easy access.

The way the front panel was designed you can either plug in directly from the front or run a cable underneath your AxiomAir and access the front wire connections without having to leave the door open. It is the same for the USB inputs. As long as your thumb drive is not huge you can plug it in the front and close the door.

For the Sub Out we saw no real need for it to be on the front so it is rear only. For the Analog In we anticipated different needs that drove us to put it on both the front and the rear. We did not see the LAN connection getting much use at all but it can be wired permanently without the need to leave the door open or accessed from the front from time to time if needed.

Hi Shawn,

There is a max volume control setting in the interface that you can set and store. The Analog volume knob is only needed to give you a little added control when using the Analog Input on your AxiomAir.

Sounds like a lot of thought was put into the I/O locations. I didn't know there are two analog in jacks. It makes sense - one rear for permanent connection and a front one for temporary. I personally am not bothered by the sub out being on the back even though I will be frequently connecting and disconnecting my sub. I am just glad there's a sub out.

Ian,

Thanks for the heads up on the front door. I didn't notice it, but when the door is closed, there is an opening on the bottom of it the an Ethernet cable could fit through. So, the cable could really be hidden from sight when hard-wired to the network.

Is it too late to be a beta tester for the speaker! :P

I just received the news letter from the kickstarter project.
I assume it's just the software that we're beta testing, and not the "hardware" itself?
