Hello. This is my first post and I'm looking for advice. For the last few years my theater system has consisted of a pair of M60s,VP100, QS4s and a EP350. I've been running that with an older Pioneer VSX1018. After researching I really think I could get more out of the Axioms. What would be the better path? Going with an amp with my receiver or update the receiver with a newer more powerful unit? Thanks for any advice you can throw my way. I'm a novice at this.

Personally I think your current amp delivers plenty of power for that setup unless you are in a very big room.

The advantage of going with a newer receiver is you get all the new goodies like Atmos, network/bluetooth connectivity, 4K video support ...

I guess it depends on where you are going with your home theater.

On the other hand, you can go with an Axiom ADA1000 5 channel for $1,000 USD and get true 125 w all channels driven, which is gobs of power and turn your system up to 11 (earplugs sold separately).

Oh, welcome to the forums. smile

I wanted to get started on this topic actually. Also new and looking for amplifier advice. I have a grand master on wall Axiom system which I ran on a few different receivers in my last theaters. Trying to get more clarity from my sound in the new room I am building and considering getting a preamp- amp combo. One of the websites our there had a rep who recommended the Yamaha CX-A5000 along with the MX-A5000. Was a bit pricey for my taste.

Should I go with the preamp-amp combo to improve clarity at volume? Is it worth spending the money? My room is about 20X17. my Grand Master is a 7.1 on wall.

It all matters.....just not very much.

Welcome newbies!

I personally have two separate amps driving five speakers in my HTC. I also use a pre-processor rather than a receiver. Yes, I can indeed hear the difference which is most prominent at higher volume. I enjoy listening at higher volume so the investment is worthwhile for me! YMMV.

aarons your room is on the larger side so you may indeed benefit from increased amplifier power, unless you really don't play the system very loud. Bigduke6, is your listening room also large?

BTW, if you do decide to go with separate amps, you should likely consider upgrading to the "HP" version of the Axiom speakers. I also found this to be an improvement!

Enjoy!

Bigduke6:

I personally feel that the biggest lacking inside audio equipment is a true standardisation of measurement where you can really measure one piece against another. By that, the problem with trying on paper to compare one 100watt receiver to another is virtually impossible as when it comes to driving speakers as 100watts does not necessarily equal 100watts.

As watts = voltage * current. You can get the same wattage from an amp by increasing the voltage so you don't need as much current. Marketing departments have caught onto this and now use the term High Current amplifier to describe themselves, but again that is just ma marketing term as it doesn't say relative to what.

I have an old Nakamichi receiver that has less wattage than my more modern Pioneer receiver that is in the family room, but sounds far better. Numbers on paper really are meaningless unless you have far more detail as to how those numbers were generated.

I do think that there are some brands of equipment that will give a far better sound than others do. Quite often you have to pay for that privilege and it's not just paying for the sticker name on the front, but also for what has been put inside.

Many receivers are not full bandwidth rated.
