Hi all,
I've been frustrated by available online services of inferior quality (netflix etc...). My staple has been the PS Store with my PS3 so I can download full movie file in advance and won't be subject to streaming bandwidth issues. However the PS Store only gives you the 'regular' Dolby Digital audio track - not the HD audio track. Does anyone know of a download style service that gives you the full digital quality of both audio and video of today's BluRay and and UltraHD (4K) discs?

Thanks!

It's called .torrent and sits rather on the other side of the legal system

Yeah, I was hoping for a legal equivalent. I've only dabbled in torrent and haven't been happy with consistency of results. Plus, maybe I'm too honest, but I like the idea of some pennies of my purchase making it's way back to the content creators. Also I'd like to imagine there would be some guarantee of quality this way instead of the free for all you can get in the torrent world.

If nothing like this legally exists, maybe it's a business opportunity? You can choose to download SD or HD, maybe UHD (with audio equivalent) could be offered for a small up-charge.

I'm hoping there's something out there and I just haven't found it yet...

OK, did a bit more digging and found one system that pretty much does what I'm asking about - except it's an expensive system, not just a legal download rental service.

This is part of why streaming sux. along with wasting bandwidth which is expensive in my locale. And the quality is $hit imho. I get all the BD rentals i want for 40 bux a month. If the movie is really good i will get the 4k version from Amazon.

The biggest problem that I have with the whole movie scene is the distribution of media.

If you think of it, all movies now are in digital format. I have a friend who owns an independent movie theater and they ended up going sort of a go-fund-me route as they had to convert the whole cinema over to 2k digital projectors just to get content.

Now CD's have been around for decades. The technology on how to bulk press manufacture them is old school. The same process is used for DVD, and Blu-ray and UHD Blu-Ray. The cost of the manufacturing facilities have long since been paid off. So why does it cost $15 for a DVD and $25 for a Blu-Ray and $45 for an UHD-Blu-Ray when the cost of manufacturing them are effectively equal?

Distribution costs for all of them are identical. If you pull back the cover, it should cost more to make a DVD as they need to down mix and re-encode to lower res to remaster the DVD, yet they charge generally 1/2 the price for most movies as they charge for Blu-Ray.

Streaming, you could say should also cost more than physical media from the side it too needs to be re-encoded for bandwidth limitations, plus the cost of storage and hardware as streaming to one person is far more easy than doing the same to thousands of people all wanting the same thing but at different points and pausing, starting, repeating. Bandwidth hell. That all costs money.

So why does a Blu-Ray and UHD Blu-Ray still cost more for a single movie than a months worth of streaming?

A: GREED!

If they sold the movies for $3-5 would anyone pirate? Would you not likely purchase more?

Of course we would all be purchasing a lot more, if they charged the actual value. Over here in Greater Vancouver we're now down to a very small handful of independent movie shops.

HMV was OK while it lasted, though if you wanted any thing other than the big box office junk it had to be special order.

I found the same with most of the music at HMV as well. Why in the world would anyone purchase their CDs etc. when it was all the same crap replayed to death on the radio.

Here's hoping enough people support their local indie shops so we can actually still buy some content outside of the net.
