i know i stand to take a real beating for this.. but turn on any talk radio and it's been all they have talked about. you'd think he was the second coming of Jesus and cured lepracy or something like that.

The tragically hip were an OK band at best. I am sure there are many many that you'd rather listen to. I put it if you were stuck on a desert island and could only listen to the music of one band I am sure that Tragically Hip would not be the one you'd choose.

Not saying he didn't write something that connected with the Canadian music scene of the time. But it's not that we didn't know he was dying and would be kicking the bucket any day. They had the big blowout for him last year was it. I bet that most people thought he'd already passed away.

If you are Canadian and have worked a job with a radio around....

What a loss. Truly a sad day for Canadians. A tragedy. All radios on site today were playing the hip. And everyone was into it for the same reason, fan or not. We are Canadians.

IMO there music was special. A true Canadian flavour. My absolute favourite...no, but one of.The true loss is in the spirit of the man. Not your typical rock star. No trashed hotels, or front page mug shot pics. Always one looking to give back and always grateful for all he experienced and was able to achieve. A true example of what I believe is "Canadian"

I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of The Hip, although I like and have grown up with their music. They've somehow organically grown to be an integral part of the Canadian music scene. I think this article does a fair job of trying to explain it - it's short and to the point:
http://www.torontosun.com/2017/10/18/ahead-by-a-century

For those not familiar, Alan Cross who wrote the above article is a walking encyclopedia of modern music history and his newsletter, blogs and radio shows (The Ongoing History of New Music) are worth checking out for anyone listening to music from the past 50 years or so.

RIP Gord, your legacy will live a very long time. Thank you.
