Are you kidding me???? Talk about turn around time. Not fair, a custom panel

Ian is just too much! I want mine to say "Bourbon mellow" and "Disco Fever"

Wait a minute..... "Bourbon Mellow" and "Gin mind bender"

Better yet.... just "Bourbon" or "Gin" Gin is the gut punch.
Yep, "Gin Gut Punch"

Mmmmm...gin and tonic with a wedge of lime. Introduced to me by Margie McInnis and her three sisters at their island in Lake of the Woods when I was 22. Dreeeeeaaaamy......

Pick your poison, the best memory and maybe Ian would make the appropriate DSP curve for the switch position! Now that would sell some subs smile

I am going to Discogs to order up a vintage copy of "Donovan", "Mellow Yellow"

Very cool.
This goes beyond customer service imo.

Ian is definitely up to something and he's using me as a test subject. smile

I'm really quite amazed with the agility at Axiom. As someone who works on products for a living, I'd love to know how they do what they do. They seem to have all the toys in house and are very creative to boot.

BTW, Ian is the one working on the code for this mode. I did read before he was the one who worked on the DSP code for the 800. I think it's a testament to his passion for audio and for self-improvement that drives him to learn new things.

I remember when I purchased my first EP400, Ian delayed shipping it as he was rewriting/upgrading its DSP code. Mine have a USB port to enable this.

Once he completed the coding, my sub went up the 90' tower for testing & then it came to me...

This used to be the norm - if you have engineering & manufacturing under the same roof and management that understands what matters to the end customer almost anything is possible. Unfortunately that is an incredibly unusual combination these days.

I expect I'll be upgrading it once the subwoofer app is out. The 800 is absolutely awesome by the way. What a difference from my 600v2!

I've been longing to update our old EP350 for quite some time.
If next year goes well, i might pull the trigger, but i'm just not sure what might be best.
The 800 is too large for sure and even the 600 is probably overkill for the room. Since the redesigns, the 500 seems most likely.

Ian wrote me an email and the Gin Gut Punch setting will have a 6 db boost in the 50 to 80 hz range in that setting. The Bourbon Smooth will be the standard flat curve.

I am anxious to try this with various types of music, it should be fun. Especially in conjunction with the EP500 to the back side of the room, I'll put the EP800 to the left side wall.

I'm really keen on experimenting with this four-fold boost in power.

With the 160 in my system, I have the fronts and center crossing over to the EP800 at 40Hz. It sounds absolutely right and for the first time in 11 years, I can actually say I have an appropriate level of slam. I've commented on these boards that I've never been able to hear the sound of the drumstick hitting the drum skin; well, I no longer have that problem. Instead of bass sounding thick and muddy, it sounds clean, tight and what is usually described as "fast". I can turn the sub level up and it never gets muddy - just louder as it should be.

This boost may result in a slightly better kick without going over the top. Of course I can always increase my cross-over setting and then I'm sure it will knock my socks off.

TAM has two EP800s in a 100 cubic foot room! He velcros his 'nads to his thighs to prevent them from clanging.

Forgot the velcro - my 'nads are still clanging...

I have been e mailing with Ian on this EP800 project. He spent a lot of time in the big chamber running tests on the new DSP code to make sure it worked as intended. He told me something I didn't know; in live rock concerts they filter all bass below 40 hz out. He said the bass that does the hit the chest job is the range above and up to 100 hz. I will be getting my sub shipped out sometime next week, they are building it.

It will be interesting to see how it syncs with my new EP500, which by the way is really opening up nicely. I didn't believe in speaker break in, but I am beginning to second guess that. It really seems to be putting out a lot more after using it now for a couple of weeks.

I am happy to hear Ian put the 800 through the paces. I know he was incognito around the factory for at least a couple of days so he must have been hanging out by the chamber. I've been a bit worried about cabinet resonance with that 6 dB boost.

I went to a Trooper concert at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino and had to leave after a couple of songs because I thought I'd have a heart attack. The chest slam was unreal.

I appreciate the linearity that Axiom strives to achieve. I think though subs are different and we should have the ability to defeat the linearity to adjust for room conditions or mood.

I didn't ask Ian if they had cabinet resonance issues, I might shoot him a message to ask about it.

Awesome! I forgot what I sent you. Ha ha. And I come and read everything, just haven't been commenting. I'll need some new Axiom products in my life sometime in 2018. First up is a new TV, but I do want to get Atmos going at home. But of course I want to do it right and get an Anthem unit, which means saving longer.

This is interesting.
Could have a pair running using the avr cross over (say 100 for discussions sake) and a pair working @ 20 or 40. Wonder how it would balance out.

Since I have an EP500 which of course doesn't have the 'switch', it will be running in the flat range. I'll be teaming it up with the new 800 in the switchable controlling set up, I'll report on how it meshes with the standard EP500. I suspect it will be just fine as the 800 will probably do the heaving lifting and the 500 will be filling in things. It should be fun to see what happens with phasing and crossover points.

We need gut punch and chest punch modes. Let's see...we have the 'nads, the gut and the chest covered. What's next? I don't think I want to be sub-punched up-side the head.

Since 'nad tickling is in the 10 to 30 Hz range, gut punch is 50 to 70, chest punch is 80 to 100, sucker punch must be 110 to 130?

I just got off of Discogs Donovans Greatest Hits.... all 1966 to 1968 recordings on vinyl; it sounded great with the EP500. I have to say that the Anthem AVM60 with it's processing to create bass on vinyl tracks is pretty cool as vinyl doesn't have bass for sub out. It just plays bass out for the main speakers, but the sub out for the EP500 sounds really natural.

The bass out of my 800v4 is very natural as well. With my 600v2, I had to cross it over at 40Hz because the bass was blurry/ murky. Even at 40Hz the bass wasn't right. With the 800, a higher crossover just results in more of a very good thing. Turning up the gain does the same. I love it!

I am curious how your system is set up. Is all the bass below a set frequency sent to the 500?

Coolness
I use M80s and a Ep500 with my MRX720, so far any kind of processing the Anthem does regardless of source just works well.

I use a Fluance table comparable to the Rega RP1, personally love it, great addition for me.

Previously was using a Pro AVR {Tascam PA-R200} made by Integra but I never got the sound I'm getting from the MRX out of it.

I am surprised by how many on these boards still listen to vinyl. Is that because y'all had a collection from the old days or is that something you got into even after CDs came out?

First off, I defeated the Anthem room correction with bass management. However I left on the digital signal processing, which is what sends a bass range to the sub outputs on the AVM 60. I don't know what the cutoff frequency is for the bass range, but I can say that with my crossover on the EP500 set at 150 hz. it works nicely and I get the entire range.

As far as why vinyl? It just blows away digital sources for smooth pleasing balanced sound. But I will temper that observation with this; you need to have a very solid platform for the turntable/tone arm and phono stage to amplify the signal. I had what I thought was a very good set up, my vintage Marantz 6300 with a vintage Audio Technic AT15ss super shibata and a NOS stylus. The pre-amp was a NAD pp2e, which was a simple $200 unit. It still sounded better than my CD's. Then I picked up a $900 Clear Audio Smart phono stage and WOW; I was hearing things that I didn't know were on the tracks. And the sound stage jumped out. That got me looking at high end turntables which I thought were more about eye candy center pieces more than really improving much over my 6300 (which by the way is still in high demand). I picked up an 8 year old VPI Ares3 turntable without an arm. I then found the SME Series IV magnesium one piece tone arm with very high end bearings. Just to keep things on the up and up for comparison, I mounted the AT15ss cartridge in the new set up to eliminate any possibility that a new high end unit made any improvements..... Well, let me just say that I was blown away!! The sound stage elevated tremendously, again instruments which were buried in the music suddenly were important and best of all, not a trace of bass feed back, nothing. This $9000 turntable/tone arm just blew me away in what I was hearing! The good news is that I found it all used and in mint condition for $3K. It was the best money spent on my system other than the Bryston Model T's smile And soon my Gin gut EP800

Personally I enjoy the more life like experience of vinyl.

Have never been to a perfect concert sh!@ happens similar to a bump of the needle. Have never heard a performer sound anything as good as their recordings make them.

Do you guys ever check out Michael Fremer's youtube content or Analog planet. He's a total Analog fanatic with the system and record collection to boot quite interesting. He also does quite a bit of Vinyl VS. Digital content.

Peace

Yeah, I love my Turntable... not only is it stunning to look at, it performs. I can crank it all as loud as I want with the bass up as far as I like and I don't have any feed back, nothing. But I also had modified a set of SVS isolation feet from the subs I sent back to them and installed them in place of the aluminum conical feet on the VPI, what a difference that made!

Wait 'till you get the 800. You'll have to relocate the
turntable down-cliff from your house. LOL!

I have watched 2 of his videos and he and Kalman Rubinson are the only reason i buy stereophile.
His latest video is about a case he testified in for quincy jones and its really worth watching. I also watched one where he was interviewed in his own listening space and talked about his records and all his electronics etc ,really interesting guy and quite charismatic . There is just something about vinyl for me , i guess a lot of it is great memmories of the good ole days when life was so much easier there is just TMI these days and it can be overwhelming.

I'd rather have it like this than have to take a bus and then walk a mile in 8 feet of snow at -40 in a blizzard in North Winnipeg just to look something up in Encyclopaedia Britannica at the public library only to find out it wasn't in there to begin with so I got an F on an assignment that didn't matter anyway!

All that was done to help you build character and that not everything you do at a job has a point only that you must do it. The internet is as evil as it is handy, i am pretty sure terrorist using telemarketing had very little success especially compared to having the internet.

Imagine them calling someone up and saying "hello would you like to be a martyr and blow up your neighbors" sound out the dialect in your own head, think russell peters . LOL

Each generation has its own set of challenges to help build character; no dangerous walk to the library needed. My paternal grandfather had to steal food from the Nazis. I am glad none of us had to do that.

I do agree however that we have adopted a very cavalier attitude about technologies whose impacts are uncertain.

I have no concerns that the 800 with Gin Gut Punch will feedback into the phono Stage.... I spent a lot of time machining the new iso-feet mounting and it's solid, I mean total isolation. I stand by my work

I can't stop listening to my system since I got the EP800v4NME.

I never realized how addictive listening to music can be until I got this Nirvana of a sub. I typically listened to music with PLII before this sub. Now, I find stereo is better with all types of material. Also, Audyssey and non-Audyssey sound close now but Audyssey is still better-sounding in my room.

The sub is so damned addictive; everyone who has heard it, wants it badly. I temporarily have a second one that I'll be hauling over to one of my buddies because since he heard it, he can't rest. He just can't hear with his SVS what he is hearing with mine.

I'm still keeping mum on the Gut Punch mode because I don't want to influence Slim's opinion.

Surprisingly, I have nothing negative to say about this sub or the VP160v4. I'll forever be in Ian's gratitude for giving my sub his personal attention.

I have had the 800 for 4 years now, and it still impresses me on a regular basis. Some subtle LFE in a movie, some deep and full ver low notes on a pipe organ and agility with cellos and double-bass (for example). Expensive, but worth every penny if you can afford it!

I wonder what the differences are between a v4 and a v3 besides the phase control and the mighty dust cap. I heard the v4 uses flux capacitors.

Aren't Flux Capacitors some devices you can use in Masters of Orion when designing ships?

I suggest dialing it in without gin gut punch/disco fever or whatever you're calling it nowadays. smile

Let that mode simmer for three dozen tunes and then engage.
