To set up a discussion.... Now that Axiom has powered speakers Seems like the next step would be to add a DSP.
- what kind of improvements could we expect with an active crossovers? - would the future of audio be to send the signal to each speaker digitally? - does Room correction and surround processing need to be done centrally or can some of it be offloaded to a DSP enabled speaker? - would adding a mic at a speaker help with speaker/room calibration (like apple's unit)? - would the extra cost be worth it?
Just off loading some thoughts as I search for a pre-pro and attempt to redesign my room (for the Nth time ... )

I anticipate within 5 years we won't need speakers. New headphone technology will displace speakers. Imagine the disruption!

It sucks that all your beloved audio equipment will become worthless, eh Blair?

Mojo ... why stop there ... I mean why would you need speakers when the chip in your head can feed the signal directly ...

The chip in the head won't happen in 5 years. That will come in 2035.

someone has a steel plate in their head . That will be the satellite dish inside Mojo's head so he can watch British sitcoms and Italian variety shows from Europe.

looks like the active crossover axiom is becoming a reality. I was still questioning LFR1100 over the M80... and now Active LFR1100. If money was not a factor I'd be there. Don't forget you'll need to add 10 channels of amplification to boot. One of these days I'll have to visit and do a M100/LFR1100/Active LFR1100 comparison.
Eventually, I assume this will all go into the speaker cabinet ... and you'd just plug your pre-amp into it. Speaking of pre-amps ...
If designing a state of the art pre-pro was not such a hairy task (i.e. coming out with something before the main stream decoder chips/designs are available) ... I'd put a 16 channel surround processor on the axiom wish list ... In the mean time I'll probably be going the AV8805 route unless something better comes out between now and November.

An Axiom 16 channel processor is not enough. You need 10 channels for main LFRs, another 10 channels for the LFR center, 6 for height, 6 for width, 6 for sides, 6 for back, 12 for ceiling and 4 for subs. Let's see...60 channels. And oh yeah...you need 56 channels for amplification.

I can be serious but just not on a regular basis. I can't take life too seriously; I'll never get out alive.
With regard to this entire post, I really do think speakers will go away one day. "Smart" headphones will take over and then as someone on here said, chip implants.
In the meantime though, the world will discover the holographicness of active Axioms and some will spend serious coin making all speakers in their rooms active. Hence the need for mega-channel processors and amplifiers.
