For what it's worth, I had a similar experience with M5HP's vs M60v4's... although I would probably be even happier with the M5's sound if I could trade the bass bump for a bit less bass.

That said, there's a good chance the difference is at least as much cabinet & crossover (or even the room) as the HP bass driver but I don't know (yet).

re the side walls - you'd have to see the layout - left 8', right 10'.
The front and back walls are more of an acoustic concern - 13' apart and parallel - even slight toe in make a big difference/helps to disrupt the standing wave.
Listening to a 24bit vinyl rip of My Life In The Bush of Ghosts as I type - and I have to say these old M80v2s are so impressive - the idea that the M5HP could trump them is exciting...

Thanks for that input, bridgman. Yet to hear a dissenting opinion - seems the guys nailed it with the 5HP.

John, since my experience with the Pioneer vs Denon, I wonder if your bass problem isnt related to your electronics.

SRP, reading your posts and understanding more about you and your layout, I highly recommend staying far away from any Axiom v4. I lived with v2 for 11 years and since I've switched, I can't pull away from it. I've become consumed by it. You will find yourself listening more and more until you just lay there like a lump, wasting away in audio nirvana until your loved ones place you in an asylum.

You will kick yourself for not upgrading earlier. And you will love them so much, you'll want to feed them the best signal possible.

It's possible - I did notice what seemed to be a small improvement in bass when going from the HK 3470 receiver's built in amplifier to the Adcom power amp (a 555 mk2 IIRC) - but I suspect the room is still a factor despite my efforts.

We'll find out for sure when I get the LFR1100's set up... they have HP drivers, new-ish crossovers and a heavily braced cabinet.

Forgot to mention... when I decided to respond I had only read the thread title and I thought the topic was amplifier power.

I was expecting to be able to respond with something like "yep, I think everyone agrees that high power is a Good Thing".

John, a scant 3 months ago I paid no attention to high power. Then I got the v4 and started experimenting. Even with the hobbled external amp connected up to my Pioneer, I am now a convert. Power, power and more power is where it's at. My only concern now is how all this power is going to impact my hearing.
