I just can't get enough of my QS10. Compared to my QS8, they are crystal clear, far more dispersive and they pound like crazy at a 40Hz crossover. I'm thinking a triple HP woofer would be a very good thing. Anyone else out there with the same thoughts?

I actually suggested a speaker like this years ago and was "poo-poo'd" for it. I'd love to trade in my 2 QS8 Surrounds for these (keeping QS8's in the rear), but since they are 13 years old they have no value, even though they are mint.

I had four QS8s - two sides, two rears. Now with two side QS10s, I don't need rears or Atmos.

The QS8s have value; the trade-up store says so. Do yourself a solid and give the QS10s a shot. The QS8s aren't even close!

To be fair, the 7'2" ceiling where your QS10's are located is not ideal for ATMOS anyways where Dolby recommendations specify an optimal range of 7'6" minimum to 12'. It would be hard for you to get optimal sound dispersion of a downward firing in-ceiling M3 to cover viewing positions greater than your sweet spot (i.e. if you have a multiple row seating arrangement or even seating that covers what I imagine is a 24'x25' room (4200 cu ft = 7.16x24x25). You have to admit this is likely an atypical room configuration for home theater where the power of a QS10 does come in quite handy to fill your room.

However, in a more typical rectangular room configuration that is 14-18 feet wide, the QS10's may actually be too close to the listening positions to be fully effective without being overpowering. This is why QS4's can actually be more effective than QS8's for pure home theater use.

This also all boils down to what you actually use your space for. In a dedicated 90%+ movie home theater room, I would definitely recommend that ATMOS is far superior to 5.1. I am simply blow away at how good some of the recordings are. Ready Player One is not a great movie plot/acting wise, but holy cow is the use of ATMOS sound placement technology used well! Mad Max Fury Road is another such title. I really don't care for the movie but really appreciated the work put in by the sound engineer! I have watched it in 5.1, 7.1, and 5.1.2 in comparison tests and ATMOS is noticeably superior. Fantastic Beasts is another such title.

To be honest, my wife and two of my kids simply don't notice or care. My third child shares the same passion as I do for sound so he notices and agrees.

Hmmmmm...these are very interesting thoughts. I have folks who listen to my system in 5.1 and cannot believe I don't have overhead speakers. Case in point: in season 5, episode 5 of Breaking Bad, when they lifted the methalamine off the train, Jesse let the train pass over him. Well...that train was right on top of us. It was truly astounding. I had nothing like that kind of an effect or dynamics with QS8s. Like you say, it's likely because of my room dimensions.

Regarding the dynamics, that is something that doesn't get talked about often. The QS10s are incredibly dynamic. I am sure my QS8v2 were compressing.

Yes, I would imagine that for a general loud scene such as a train rushing overhead, the QS10s in your configuration would handle that significantly better that QS8's.

However, in a more subtle application, such as the scene in Fantastic Beasts where the little paper origami creatures walk through the message tubes traveling from front to left to overhead left to overhead right and back down to back right, this is completely lost in 5.1 but oh so magnificent in 5.1.2.

Does it add to the movie? Not plot wise. But sound wise, it sent a chill down my spine and at first I thought I had mice in the ceiling until I realized this is what ATMOS does!

Come on, man! Who the hell wants to listen to little paper origami creatures when you can listen to a meth train?

Sounds like a Finnish Metal vs Philharmonic Orchestra argument. I like both but can appreciate the latter for much longer periods of time.

Just watched "Us" over the weekend which was my first horror movie using ATMOS. ATMOS was made for this genre! I don't believe my two teenagers slept well that night eek
