A sale to $1500 isn't what i'm looking for. Not unless i had no other choices.

Hey Chess,
I just ordered a Denon AVR-X3500H from Amazon. They are an authorized dealer, so you get full warranty (I did not know that). This is a 2018 model, and it's the lowest level Denon with audio pre-outs and supports 4K. Roughly half off the regular price right now. Only 7.2 though.
It's going to replace my incredibly reliable Denon 3808 I use in the family room. I need to replace it because I've moved to 4K. Due to this move to 4K, connecting devices and running cables has become a PITA with the 3808 in the chain. I can't use it as a hub anymore.
I've had great luck with Denon. I regret not getting a Denon for my Theater room instead of the Anthem 1120 I bought. I love ARC, but the Anthem is clunky in comparison to Denon's user interface and system set up functions.
At any rate, it's worth a look. Might fit your needs. Sounds like you're in the same boat as i am. Moving to 4k and the old AVR is obsolete (no HDMI plugins as one major factor). The Onk has worked great for 15 years. I do recall reading about problems with Onk HDMI boards but that was years ago. Aside from that, i'm not married to any brand necessarily. They are all pretty good quality, similar all around for the most part. In looking for some of those Denons online, i'm seeing prices of refurbished for $1100 Cdn but otherwise $1200 at Amazon.ca. https://www.amazon.ca/Denon-Audio-Video-Component-Receiver/dp/B07FMRD1RVCan't justify the price difference over the Onk at Crutchfield.

We need to take the HDAM from Marantz, AL32 from Denon, VLSC and WRAT from Onkyo, ARC from Anthem, Direct Energy HD, PQFA and PQLS from Pioneer, TopART and Surround:AI from Yamaha and slam them into a surround receiver that costs the same as a 2-channel Sherwood.

Oh yeh, you're in Canada.....
So the US Crutchfield site has that Denon 3500 for the same price as the US Amazon - $599 USD. But the CA Crutchfield site has it listed as discontinued. Interesting...
That Onk you are looking at appears to be the better of your options. I am one of those lucky Onk owners who had to send one in for a board replacement. I will never own another Marantz, due to horrid customer service. Don't forget new HDMI cables that will pass a 4K signal.... Monoprice has numerous options.

Chess, check out Gibbys Electronics in St Catherines. They usually have some great deals on AVRs inc Denon....for eg... X4400H (B stock) for $879Cad.

Hey Adrian. I did actually see them as a link that came up when i searched for units but both the X4400H and the 4500H are out of stock for B stock units. https://gibbyselectronicsupermarket.ca/p...ceiver-b-stock/Otherwise, good price.

Oh yeh, you're in Canada..... Ya and the exchange isn't as good as it was 10 years ago when we hit par with the USD. So the US Crutchfield site has that Denon 3500 for the same price as the US Amazon - $599 USD. But the CA Crutchfield site has it listed as discontinued. Interesting... If i wanted to travel an hour down to the border, i can sometimes get things shipped within the US to a parcel holding place just over the border, but with the exchange cost, it actually works out to be the same or more so it isn't worth the trip once i include gas and lost time. That Onk you are looking at appears to be the better of your options. I am one of those lucky Onk owners who had to send one in for a board replacement. That does appear to be the final answer. I'm just still on the fence as to whether i get the new AVR now, or wait until i actually need it. I was not expecting to get the newer tv until this fall at the earliest, as long as the old girl we have keeps kicking. I fear i'm going to find myself shopping for a tv in the middle of the summer without any good Black Friday or post holiday deals (like with this Onkyo atm). Part of the problem in pulling the trigger is waiting to hear about another contract at the end of March. If it doesn't happen, then the tv will be another conversation review and i'll be sitting on an AVR that i'm not really using. So should i spend that $800 plus taxes now when its a want not a need? ....and the analysis paralysis makes the world go round and round. I will never own another Marantz, due to horrid customer service. Good to know. Don't forget new HDMI cables that will pass a 4K signal.... Monoprice has numerous options. With the exchange again, i've found i don't save much by going with Monoprice. I just wait for a local sale and it usually gets the cables within a few dollars of online shopping. I've already got a 4k HDMI on the main floor tv any new HDMI will all be 4k compatible (with the units that do 4k cuz i don't think the Nintendo Switch does).

I just purchased a new Sony x900f 4k Tv. One thing I found out real quick is that the Tv itself will upscale any signal that isn't 4k....using a receivers 4k up scaling is pointless, at least so far. I turned my OPPO's up scaling off as well. Although I would think the OPPO's video processor is better than the Tv's...you can't turn it off on the Tv. The image produced when the up scaling is turned on is kinda weird...reflective even. At least it is on mine. It's not really annoying, but it does look "off" haha.

Although I would think the OPPO's video processor is better than the Tv's...you can't turn it off on the Tv. If you leave the OPPO upscaling on, the TV would receive a 4K signal. The TV would only use its built-in upscaling when receiving a signal at resolutions lower than 4K.
