Hi Everyone,

I am purchasing my first home theatre/music system that is not pre-packaged in a box!!!

I am going to be using either the HK630 or the HK7200, I haven't quite decided yet. I will be using the speakers for about 15% 5.1 video games, 50% movies, and the 35% on music. The room is a medium sized room, a little over 300 sq ft.

I generally listen to music when I have people over for social gatherings. Later in the evenings, when only the partiers are left, the music gets turned up loud...VERY loud. I mean to the point where if you listened to it long enough, you will damage your ears. I usually listen to rock music and some dance stuff, lots of thump thump music. I really like the thump thump. But, I think I have CD's from every genre in my collection.

The M80 HT is out of the price range, and the M60's are right on the verge, so it is between the M50's and the M60's.

I do have a question about the quadpolar speakers and was wondering how they are for music, regular CD's? I don't have many DVD-A's yet, but they will come. Would I be better off getting a pair of M50's for the back instead of the quadpolar speakers? (or M60's for the back of the M60 HT)

Thanks for the help guys/gals,

One more thing, how long does it take to deliver to Canadian addresses (Calgary, Alberta)

How far from the speakers will you be sitting? How high is your ceiling? What speakers have you been listening to?

What have you liked, what have you not liked? Are there any B&W dealers near you? Give their 703 towers a listen...the Axiom M60ti sounds very, very similar. (yet costs 1/3 the price!)

You know, I don't think anyone on these boards has done a direct comparison of the M60s vs the M50s. We've had a number of M22 vs. M50s, and those are pretty informative, and can probably be extrapolated from to some degree.

Hi Din,

Get the M60s for up front. More drivers, cleaner sound at very loud levels. Besides, the M60s have greater clarity and detail (dedicated midrange driver).

For Western provinces, delivery is 3 to 5 days (BC is five days). So figure 3 or 4 days for Alberta. Ontario and Quebec are 1 or 2 days.

But what if he doesn't like the ultimate clarity?

Room is 24', by 14', 8'. I am not sure if there is a B&W dealer around here. I will be around 10ft away from the front drivers. I haven't had many experiences with higher quality speakers, so I don't really have anything to compare to.

What about the QuadPolar speakers? Are they good for really loud tunes ( I have never owned any), or should I consider matching the back speakers with the fronts and get two sets of M60's?

Thanks for the quick comments guys!

Greetings,
Although I didn't do a direct comparison, I did own both the m50 and m60's. I started with the 50's, and liked them so much that I was infected with upgradeitis and then went for the 60's within the 30 day window. Like everyone else says, the extra midrange does bring the speaker "out front" more for both music and theater. It really does depend on your application, as Axiom had recommended that I go with the 50's for my mostly home theater application. I found myself getting back into my old cd collection, so I went with the upgrade to m60. It is an incidious disease this upgradeitis...

Hi Din, welcome.

I think that getting towers for the surround channels is WAY overkill, UNLESS:

- you are going to really devote yourself to DVD-A/SACD listening AND
- you want truly excessive volumes AND
- you are willing to invest in separate, high quality amplification AND
- you have already invested in a high quality subwoofer

I really enjoy the QS8's for HT and regular CD listening (in multi-channel stereo mode). They are great speakers.

If overall SPL (volume) is truly your raison d'etre, you might be well served by M80's and good separates (Outlaw, Rotel, others too rich for my taste). At any rate, a good subwoofer is going to make a world of difference; do not consider only towers (even good ones like Axioms, even at four positions) as "adequate" if you are looking for "Impact Volume".

If the M60's are stretching your budget, then using a second pair of towers as rear speakers is SERIOUS overkill. The QS series speakers work just great for both music and movies. (I love my QS8's.)

Try and hit a few hi-fi shops in your area. Get a feel for the kind of sound you prefer. If you really love clarity and crystal clear details in your music, then the M60ti's are your speaker. If you prefer a more laid back, mellow, subdued sound, then I'd opt for the M50ti's.

Also...though both speakers will be able to produce nice clean, tight bass, you mentioned that you really like "thump, thump, thump" - Get your towers now, and start saving some extra coin for a nice subwoofer. You'll not regret it.
