Then it will just be my TV holding me back if I want to use Variable Refresh Rate. My next display upgrade is years off, I imagine, but I'm hoping to one day have an 8K laser projector and acoustically transparent screen so I can finally have the screen size I want as well as be able to have an LFR Active center behind it. Not that I'm currently missing my center channel. It's just one of those why-wouldn't-I-do-that upgrades.

Your future plans sound amazing. Do eeeeeet! laugh. Not sure about long cables that will carry 8K at 120hz though. Likely display port? You are looking at over the 40gb/s threshold for sure. Double?

That link Vincent at hdtv test posted is pretty handy. The advanced tab is awesome.

I doubt I would do 120 Hz at 8K from any source for the foreseeable future. I'm sure I would just let the projector upconvert a 4K signal to its native 8K.

Still, long cables can be an issue. Hopefully there will be a decent active cable solution if passive doesn't want to work.

Games ... one of my kids keeps trying to rope me into his video games ... he likes playing me because he can whoop my ass.

I gave up on most video games as I'm likely to get hooked and the way my mind works ... Once I get interested in something I have trouble letting go to do other things which need to get done. I've learned my lesson a few times over and just ended up having to go cold turkey to join the real world again. Games are designed to be addictive. In the past I've worked with people who came to work because it was the only way to support their world of warcraft character or other such habit. Also intense games effects my mood and ability to interact with others. It takes a few hours for me to detox (My kids are the same way).

Now, that said, I do occasionally play a video game with my kids but prefer more old fashion board games as there's a more even playing field there. The game I enjoy the most and is quite productive is called the stock market ... been playing that one for over 40 years.

For people with excellent eye sight 4K is good at a viewing distances > 10' on 150" screen.
Most will sit further away, have smaller screens, or in my case poorer eyesight smile

But perhaps, I'm being naive since I've never experienced 8K.

Oh, I'm not saying 8K because I think it's necessary. I just think by the time I am ready buy a projector, that will be what's available. 4K seems like plenty for me. Even sitting pretty close to my 65" TV, it can be hard to tell the difference between 1080P and 4K.

I think hardware that can push 8K resolutions might be better suited to VR, which would fill more of your field of view.

Thankfully, I don't have the attention span I used to have. It's only certain games that fight for a significant chunk of my time. While I spend hours playing Bejeweled, I consider that more therapeutic music time than game playing time. Ha ha. Besides that, the only ones I usually put the time in on are the big Bethesda single-player RPGs, and those come out years apart.

I'm not so great at playing multiplayer games anymore. I used to enjoy the occasional LAN party and could hold my own against everyone I knew in Halo, but then my nephew became a teenager and could jump around killing me with headshots without breaking a sweat. Single-player games for me!

With a PJ 1080p vs 4K uhd is readily spotted.

1080 looks great, but 4K uhd just destroys it once you get over 100”

4k is a must on bigger screens. Especially if you like to be in the action.

I was just pointing out that things get a bit over the top with 8k ...
You need to sit very close to a 8k screen to get any benefit ... try this ... if you have a 55" screen sit 3' away from it, a 65" then 4' away , 75" then 5' away ... now move closer so you can benefit from the 8k resolution. Do you start to feel uncomfortable?

Interesting. Can you share your source for the ratios?

I want to check into this for sure.
