Looking at a used ADA-1000-2. Specs say this unit has 125w/channel. I currently have an AVR (Yamaha RX-A3070) with pre-outs. I am wanting to start experimenting with separates and was thinking this could be a good start to power my left and rights.
I consider myself a noob with separates and have a few questions... 1. Should I notice a difference in sound with the ADA-1000-2? 2. I find it hard to compare against the AVR as the specs say 165w for 2ch driven.
Thanks

It depends how loud you like to listen. The 1000-2 will give you clean peaks up to 375W for each channel simultaneously. The 1000-2 will also free up your receiver to reproduce cleaner peaks for the surrounds.

Thanks Mojo. I don't listen to 2ch music a lot. Mostly movies and streaming content. So if I understand, the more amplification I can offload from the AVR, the more power (up to its max) it has to spread around to the other channels?
Thanks

Higgins, did you pick up the ADA? I’m asking bc I see one on Canuck Audio Mart, $500. I’m considering it. If that’s the same one is there a reason you didn’t purchase it? Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Kodiak, I'm quite sure this is an older ADA. I don't know what all the differences are between the older and in production units but power supply capacitance is different for sure. The one on CAM is spec'd with 54,000 uF. In production units are built with 60,000 uF.

It's Andrew vintage. The 1000, 1250 and 1500 are all Andrew's.

I think Mojo is right. I’m not sure if there were any “ before Andrew “ ADA -1000, 1250, 1500. I thought those were the -1400-2, -1400-8 models.
$500 obo is too good to be true almost. It tempting.
I wonder why the lower level of capacitance? Or rather why the increase to 60,000uF. More is better I guess or maybe a change in capacitor brand / quality / size in newer models. Although the ZA-1000 integrated is spec’d at 54,000uF.
A more general comment, that’s a really good amount of storage for the size of RMS spec.

There was no 1000, 1250 or 1500 before Andrew. Andrew spent two years of his life and nearly hung himself bringing those into production...lol!
It's hard to know why the bump in capacitance. It could have been as simple as higher value capacitors were easier to source.

I think at $500, " beggars can't be chooosers " or so they say. 6,000 uF less in capacitiance isn't worth the $800 more id pay to get a new one.
It's gonna cost me about $100 to get it shippped to me at the cheapest and slowest priority. So im about $600 there plus the $ 350 ish I just paid for my new Axiom Transformer. Could I do better for $1000 for something else? ( If I returned the Transformer ).
Consider power quality and quantity, DAC / Streamer capability,
I better be careful, I bet it's being sold right now while I espouse it's virtues.......

Sorry. I can't talk you into it since I don't know what the extra capacitance is for.

Yeah Randy! I’m still using an Outlaw 7700 in my Theatre with my 80s, 180 and QS8s M3s. I have two Outlaw m2200 mono blocks for my two channel system. All three amps do the job quite well. Using them with the preouts on the receivers, not using dedicated pre amp separates.

The ADA1000 amp is the only model in the lineup that has not undergone any major revisions over the years. The only change was in the power supply where we went from two 27,000uF main power supply caps (hence the 54,000uF spec) to four 15,000uF caps for a total of 60,000uF. All the basic performance specifications have not changed.

Good. More storage, lower ESR, faster charging and discharging.
