Speaker break-in has been a question on many a post here over the years.
So, I was thinking that we might try a group experiment to answer a few of these questions.
  • is it needed?
  • how much time should I break it in for?
  • What can I expect to change sound wise?
  • Are the changes dramatic or subtle?
  • Do all speakers from the same manufacture change in the same way?
  • How about all speakers of the same model?

Here's the thought ....
When you get a new pair of speakers ... Do an A/B of one speaker to the other.
If they sound similar you're good to start:
- Break-in one of the speakers for a few hours and compare them again.
- A/B the speakers and Note any differences.
- repeat breaking-in and A/Bing if you think it needs more time
- Post your results to this thread

At minimum we would like to know
  • the manufacture, model, and version of the speaker
  • how much time did you break-in the speaker for
  • how big of a difference did it make
  • try and describe the changes

if you want to go over the top ... you can attempt to find out (by doing many small break-in intervals)
  • how much time did it take to notice a change
  • how long to completely break it in (i.e. when did the break-in speaker stop changing?).

It might be easier to answer that last one by breaking-in the other speaker till it sounds similar to the first. For myself ... if the change is subtle I'm fairly sure I'd not be able to answer either of these by ear. In any case, if you enjoy this sort of thing, I'd love to see your answers.
