hi all - i still use my m22 bookshelves, vp150 center, and qs8 surrounds from way back in 2004. i had an svs 20-39pci that died a few years back and i replaced it with a junk polk psw10 in a pinch. anyways i'm back into this now that i moved and am setting it all up. i upgraded the sub to a svs pb1000 pro and the receiver to an onkyo tx-sr393.

it's been so long since i've done any of this, but my first attempt doesnt sound great. i realize everyone's room is different and all that, but i'm looking for opinions.. room is 20x16x8, carpeted. havent gone the atmos route yet but thinking about it.. i cant justify that if i can't get this current setup sounding better.

it sounds muddled to my ears. almost too much mids and not enough highs. i'm also trying to figure out what the best crossover hz would be here too.. i'm lost.

Make sure the tweeters on the speakers are still good.

Set up the Onk's mic and let AccuEQ take care of it for you.

I'll second using AccuEQ to calibrate your setup. I have the same receiver, and I've come to trust it's default recommendations. It might not be as sophisticated as the premium room correction software, but it's definitely a value-added service.

Run AccuEQ without the sub in the picture.

seriously? i did run it again and it's just not giving me that chest thumping bass that i know the pb 1000 pro can do.. it's pretty weak actually.

i set the crossover to 90hz for front, center, and surrounds and bumped up the level to +3 on sub. little better but still not that deep

Did you run AccuEQ without the sub?

You need to select no sub in the set-up.

If that doesn't work, it could be the sub is not in phase with the speakers. You need to tweak the phase knob on the sub.

You can also try moving the sub. Corner gives most output but not necessarily the smoothest sound.

Unlikely but maybe your sub cable is bad.

Maybe you just need to turn it up. Maybe you need to listen to a piece with good thump. Walk around the room to see if you can feel a thump. Then just put your seat there.

You can also try setting the cross-over to 60Hz to see if that gives you more thump.
