I like to keep things simple, so I have a Pioneer Elite DV-45A. I listen to a lot of cds on it. I'm wondering if it's in my best interest to buy a dedicated cd player/changer. Do you think I'm putting unnecessary wear on it?

K, I don't follow what you mean by "unnecessary wear", but so far as sound quality goes modern CD/DVD players have dual lasers optimised for both CDs(780nm wavelength) and DVDs(650nm)and a separate player for CDs has no advantage in this area.

Hmmm, well I'm just wondering if I should save the dvd player for dvds only, and get a cd player, or if the amount of use as a cd player doesn't really matter enough to justify getting another component.

It's still extra wear on the transport and motors - every minute of CD you listen to will be a minute less of DVD you can watch and so far I haven't been all that impressed with the lifespan of consumer DVD players (even versus consumer CD players - my HK carousel has run 12 hours a day for the past 3 years and shows no signs of stopping).

i usually use the dvd player to listen to both cd's and naturally dvd-a's especially if my wife has the cd player loaded with her favorites. both sound the same to me except the dvd-a's which sound fantastic using the analog outs.

Ya, my Sony 5 disk changer is 12 years old and still running strong despite living in college housing. I'd say it is worth its salt.

I have a 14 year old Sony 5 disk changer which is still going strong...

I admit though that I have two 5 disk Sony DVD players although not in the same system. The CD player and the better of the DVD players is in the HT...

We play CD's in the CD player and both in the DVD player. We like having the 5 disk capacity of both machines...

Now if they would come out with a 5-disk universal player (both SACD and DVD-A), that would be great...although I know Sony will not offer a model like that.

Well, that makes a lot of sense. I used to have a Kenwood cd player, but I gave it away. Doh! I think I'll start looking into a 5-disc changer. I still have until next month before I can get the M60s.

Take a quick look at ecost. They have some Denon refurbs (5 disk) at really good prices. The 1815 and 2815 also act as progressive scan DVD players with very good PQ.
