Axiom Home Page Forums General Discussion Home Theater Which Yamaha Receiver to go with?

I know a lot of you guys have the Yamaha RX-V1400 or 2400. Recently, Yamaha came out with some new receivers in the RX-V line. Of interest is the RX-V750, which has most of the bells and whistles that I want - [e.g. 7.1, PLIIx, Up-conversion to Component, phono in, YPAO etc.]. Notably, it's price tag is a couple of hundred dollars less.

I'm thinking about going with the cheaper 750. Here is what I will be sacrificing (for about $150)....

1. 100 watts/chan instead of 110
2. .06% THD instead of .04%

Maybe some other things...

My questions are:

(a) Will 90-100 Watts per channel be enough for M60s, VP100, QS8 & M2s in 7.1 setup, or will my sound suffer?

(b) How much difference will there be between the harmonic distortion present in each? Will it be audible?

The power you can work out on your own, but the THD, any good receiver/amp (Yahama, Onkyo, NAD, Denon) will be far below perception.

I don't know...Can I really figure out the power on my own?

I have absolutely zero experience with reciever separates. I grew up on boom boxes, shelf systems and home theater in a boxes.

I can understand that more wattage will mean more volume, but my question really is - will the 100 watts be much less than 110? (yeah, yeah, I know, it's 10 watts less, dummy) Will I be pumping 100 watts through my system really ever, or would it be only during parties, at midnight, with no neighbors and 50 of my best friends?

I doubt that it would be perceptably less. Alan wrote an article on that awhile back, but I don't remember the details.

The article on power, although getting a touch mathy, was excellent and will alleviate any thoughts that 10W between 2 a'v receivers does much of anything at all.

i aint really sure on the actual wattage output on the yamaha's, but my onkyo 701 is rated at 100 watts per channel.. and i gotta be honest, i havent maxed the volume knob out yet. my volume knob goes from 0-100, and i have barely got to 90.. at that volume with music, it is almost too loud to listen.. i mean really, it is LOUD..

and i was always a guy that said, "if its too loud, then you're too old".. well, i stand corrected.. if its too loud, then you probably have a kick-a$$ amp and some killer speakers..

According to the Yamaha website, the RX-V750does have YPAO capability, plus video up-conversion and variable LFE crossovers (though only in 20Hz increments). Sounds like a great unit. Anyone have an idea on the MSRP of it?

I've foudn it on the internet for around $500 (w/ warranty). Ebay's got it for around that, brand new. The MSRP is $650.
