Ok, I have about $400cdn ($60US hehe) for a new surround receiver. I have narrowed it down to Yamaha's RX-V740, or Onkyo's TX-SR601, or Denon's 1804

What are your thoughts? I prefer the Amps in the Onkyo & Denon, but I really like the fact that the Yammy has pre-outs. This is a huge plus for me, as I have plans for separate power amps some day (a long, long way off). But, I hate the fact that the crossover is fixed at 90Hz.

I have a soft spot for the Onkyo because of this review. The unit was tested with the M80's (which I have) as well as a VP150 & QS8's (coming).

I'm neutral on the Denon.

Please don't suggest larger / more expensive units. As much as I would love to, I'm afraid I can't wait to save any longer. If there are any suggestions on other units at this price point, please fire away.

Thanks in advance,
Shawn

Wow....I had the exact same decision to make. I chose the Yamaha, due to better heat-management. I will be housing it in an enclosed cabinet, and the Onkyo would have run much too hot.

Also, through eBay I was able to get the V740 brand new for a final cost of $424 (which included $28 sales tax, since the seller and I are both located in Illinois). I should be receiving it at the end of the week.

Shawn, if you can go just a little higher, consider the Yamaha 5760 , which meets all your specifications.

a refurb Onkyo 701 is also avail on macmall.com for $429. it has pre/pro capabilities and runs my M60's, VP150, and QS8's with ease.

dont be bothered by the refurb status. mine has no visible defects, and these refurb units are gone over with a fine tooth comb. i think they are actually better than the ones coming straight off the assembly line cause the get 'hands on' by techs.

give it a look.

oh, and of the choices you gave, i like the 601, and the 1804.

Take a look at the Denon 2803 here . ecost is an authorized etailer for Denon refurb/b-stock gear and quite a number of folks have had excellent experiences with them on this board. The 2803 is a level above what you are looking at and has pre/pro capability. You save around $300 going this route on the 2803.

i would definitely get the 2803. had i known about ecost, i would have purchased something similar when i was in the market, but unfortunately i bought something new. i have a great unit, but i could have had slightly better had i gone with a 2803 equivalent. Much better than yamaha, i would say, in the amp section and has all the pre outs you want.

man, i was all ready to order the 2803 from ecost when I hit calculate shipping and saw the $50 shipping and $7 handling fees. Kind of makes it less of a good deal when you tack that on to the $449 cost =( Maybe I am just being picky. Is the receiver good at $500? Last receiver I had was a cheapy Yamaha (dont know number) that was about $200 new when I bought it at Bestbuy 6 years ago.

I thought shipping was free if you spent over $25?

Evidently, because the 2803 is discounted or on clearance, it does not qualify for the free shipping. That really sucks. I am holding out for the Onkyo 801. I hope it comes back on ecost in the next couple months.
