The actual copper is less thick? 12 gauge is (or should be) 12 gauge. Have you measured it?

My Home Depot only carried up to 14 ga. Lowes had 12 ga. Better check.

How is that going to affect the total size? 12 gauge is a measure (as I understand it) of the outer diameter of the metal.
