Din, yeah if it shuts off with nothing but the power cord connected, it pretty much has to be an internal problem that'll need repair. On temporarily connecting the old Kenwood, taking off the banana plugs and trimming off enough of the 12ga strands on the end so that it fits easily should work fine.
