Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and hopefully someone out there can help. I am interested in the QS8's for surrounds but I can only install them on my back ledge. I have a room that is about 12' wide which is where my tv and front speakers are installed. I sit about 10 feet away from the display and I have 22 ft. ceilings. I have a ledge about 8' high and another 10 feet behind the couch. It goes into a kitchen past this ledge another 12' or so. I am currently using KEF monopole speakers which actually do a pretty good job but they distort on demanding passages. I was wondering if the QS8's would work in this application or should they only be used on the sides or as a 6th speaker in a 6.1 configuration.

This is really driving me nuts and any help is appreciated. The wife factor would prefer that the speakers be mounted against the walls like the QS8's could be rather than the KEF's sticking out with speaker brackets.

I use my QS8's in a 6.1 setup. My surrounds are mounted on the left and right walls. The rear center is mounted on the wall that the couch backs up to. Are you saying that you can or cannot use the side walls as mounting options? I'm trying to picture your options, but I believe I'm missing something.

My room is about 12' wide where I have my monitor and front 3 speakers. I sit about 10' away with 22' ceilings. I cannot mount the surround speakers on the sides in my room. Well I probably could if I wanted to be in heated fight with my wife. I am currently using KEFs as surrounds that are mounted on a 8' ledge about 10' behind the couch. It actually works pretty darn well but the KEFs distort on demanding passages and it is irritating to be distracted. I am asking if the Axiom surrounds would work on the back high ledge since they are quadrapole rather than direct radiating speakers. The feedback from the company said they work best on the sides but still sound pretty good in the rear as well with their surround environment. I just want to have an awesome surround sound and forget the surround speakers are there and enjoy the movie. I'm just afraid that I won't get a very good surround environment since they aren't direct radiating speakers that are pointed down towards the listening environment.

Any ideas?

Yeah...try them for a few days during the 30 day trial period. If you like them, you're set. If you don't like them, return them. I'd be willing to bet they will work great. (IMO)

Judging by the distance your surround speakers are away from the back of your couch and given my own testing with the M22s vs. QS8s as surrounds, i would probably go for the M22s in this situation (a direct radiating speaker).
You could use the receiver options to turn up the dB of the QS8s in the back to increase their effect but really, placing your surrounds 10' away from your listening position is pretty far as home theatres go. I think a direct speaker would forward the surround sound better than the QS8s at that distance. In placing my own QS8s too far behind my couch, a surround sound was created that sounded too distant and full of far off echo (even though the receiver had been adjusted for speaker distance).
The sound of a whizzing bullet sounded more like it was whizzing 50 yards out instead of 50 inches past your head.However, all that being said, the QS8s will still work to create a diffuse surround sound field in the back.

jbz makes a good recommendation to give the Axiom 30d trial a run for its money.
You only have to lose the return shipping and on the small QS8 shipping box, it doesn't amount to much.

Thanks for the suggestions. I really think the distance in my room with my vaulted ceiling would be problematic for this type of speaker also even though the 30 days to try them out may prove otherwise.

I believe shipping goes by weight, not by size.

either way it will be about 25$ to ship them back with insurance, 30 tops.

Actually Ravi, shipping costs measure both dimensions.
You can normally send a package that weighs 5 lb via CanPost anywhere in the world...unless it is 10 feet long and 20 feet high by 5 feet wide, then they get a bit testy.

My return of the M22s cost me $25Cdn and that was with $500 insurance. The QS8s should be substantially less. It really is a cheap deal.
