Hello, first time post and hoping to get an answer to my dilemma. I have been searching for a new pair of speakers for my Home Theater setup. I have looked at the B&W 600 & 601 and build quality and boomy bass in the 601 have gotten me to look else where. I have listened to the Von Schweikert VR1 yesterday and love the soundstage and imaging these little guys produce. I expected the VR1 build quality to be outstanding and did not leave broken hearted on that one. I have not had a chance to demo the Axiom M22ti because there is no one located near me to have listen. So here it goes, has anybody compared these 2 speakers and did you hear a $600 difference in sound quality? I'm searching for some answers to my dilemma. Please help me.

I have compared the VR1 to my speakers, but not directly to the M22.

The VR1 has better bass extension, good detail, and a tad bit "warmer", the cabinet is nicer too. It is a nice speaker.

Comparing them directly to the M22 would be interesting. I think choosing between the two would be pretty subjective. Outside of the bass, I don't think either has a glaring strength over the other.

Curtis - didn't you think when you heard the M22s that they had a slightly harsh treble sound? I know most people here don't think they do, and some reviewers said it went away after 50 hours or so of use.

I am considering the M22s and would like your take on them. Thanks.

Hope this doesn't bring back a bad experience, all I am asking for is a your subjective experience which seems to differ from most on this list.

Hello deach,

I had the opportunity to listen to both - but not side by side. IMO the VR1's are excellent speakers, but not worth the difference in price. Both have great soundstage, imaging, and detail in mids and upper freqs. The VR1's do have slightly more warmth at the bottom end - some similarities to the Monitor Audio sound. Both are great speakers, but the Axioms are a better value. Also you might want to take a listen to the Monitor Audio Gold series bookshelfs if you're interested in going to about $1300. To my ears they sound fantastic, just alot to spend on bookshelf speakers.

"....said it went away after 50 hours or so of use."

I wonder if that was psycho- achoustical?

or an auditory adjustment in the brain?

I did a little perception in U.C.O. a sa philo major....pshyco acoustics...man it was very very tough...as if visual information wasn't hard enough...just the auditory seems a little more abstract.

One guy I talked to said the M22 he listened to was harsh and it was a used one that he himself used for 40 hours. His friend who owned M22s said it sounded just like the ones he had at home - so apparently the "harshness" is there after much use as well.

I wonder if one person's "harsh" is another person's accurate or sharp. I just rented a car with a very sharp, precise sounding stereo in it. I really like it but I could see how someone else would think it is too sharp - too whatever the adjective is.

I like it. I think I will get the M22s - if they sound like this car stereo!! If only someone in the DC area had M22s I could audition!
