some of you know I am on 5.1 and have the Qs on the back wall behind the listener.

What wiring tends to be most common given the ability of the speaker?

wire them as REARS? and have no surrounds wired?

or treat these as surrounds but still mounted behind? due to the sound dispersion?

sewuentially what comes after the FL and FR? the sides or the REARS?

Hope you are well. In a 5.1 system you have Front Left & Right/center/side surrounds/sub. With 6.1 you add rear surrounds. 7.1 adds rear center channel.

If you are running 5.1 there is no output to the rear channels on your receiver, only the Front Left & Right/center/surround Left & Right/sub.

If you can mount the Qs to the sides of your listening area all the better, but they will work just fine out on either side on the back wall too.

I could be mistaken, but my understanding was that 6.1 included one rear, 7.1 adds a second rear, and 8.1 would be when you add a center? At least this is what I've read on other posts on this forum and on AVS? Bring on 10.1

Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES and 6.1 surround (Cut and paste)

Dolby Digital EX, and DTS-ES. This decoding method first came to light with the theatrical release of Star Wars Episode 1. Immediately, the home theater industry spoke up about this format. Many home theater enthusiasts complained about the need to purchase new equipment while the industry started making "EX Compatible" equipment. DTS jumped on board with DTS-ES, a similar effort.

This decoding method works by taking the two rear channels of a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack and run them through a Dolby Prologic-like decoder. This builds a third channel of sound from the two surround channels, which is sent to one or two amplifiers and speakers positioned behind the primary viewing position.

There is no standard that say's EX is one or two speakers but the general rule of thumb is 2. 7.1 adds a rear center.

I think conventional useage on these boards is 6.1 has front left, right, and center, left and right surround, and a rear center, while 7.1 has front left, right, and center, left and right surround, and rear left and right. Of course, since nothing (to my knowledge) is produced in discreet 7.1, the rear left and right of 7.1 use the same signal as the rear center of 6.1.

Confused yet? Somebody else hop on and give a different explanation!

I thought I had read the technologies like ProLogic IIx, Logic 7(HK), and THX's pre-processing take a 5.1...6.1 signal and re format it to simulate(?) 2 unique rear channels so they don't appear to be mono?

I just finished prewiring my basement for my soon to arrive Axiom Qs8's. I am planning on 2 Qs8's to the sides of the listening area, and eventually 2 more Qs8's for the rears....I"m curious if others are using this type of setup.

I was thinking about a similar setup but i wonder if the dual QS for the back are really necessary. Since they send the sound in several directions, wouldnt it be a good idea to have two QS for the side and one QS doing the rear center?

I have limited space in my room. Here are my scenarios:

First option: QS side speakers + 2 axiom ax1.5 behind the couch (on the floor) with the speaker pointing up.

Second option: QS side speakers + 1 QS speaker on a shelf above the couch.

Third option: take my old axiom center, use it on a shelf as a center and order a newer 150 model for my front center.

it's getting complicated.

I just realized what i can PULL OFF

take my M22s in the front and drop them to the REAR,

make the QS8s the sides

and then ORDER, I said ORDER a set of M80s for the front

man i sound tricky...he heheee hhee

That is very similar to what I am currently running...although I have M60's and no QS8's...only a 5.1 receiver.

But the M22's sound awesome as rear surrounds...although I'm sure they would sound better farther "behind" the sitting area as right now they are actually to the sides...but they sound killer there!

I think what you are proposing will sound excellent...

I think there was some discussion of this before a few months back. The idea of running qs8s as side surrounds with m22s in the back if an m22 owner "upgraded" mains to the m60/80s. I'm sure it would sound awesome if the room could accomodate it all.

so what are people NORMALLY doing in the back with Qs and ????

But that swithc aroo seems the most feasable if an upgrade in fron happens

6.1 users often use a single Q in the rear center. 7.1 users tend to prefer direct radiators in the rear.

empirically I am thinking the single Q would sound better


sounds ike a great experiement

the QS8 is pretty killer in my misplaced setup

but one in the center sounds like it could do quite a bit of sweet performing

of course if I ever did that and still upgraded i would be left with two 22s

maybe those could be bi wired (i know nothing about) to the front????
