I am having a heck of a time trying to find a good spot for my vp150 and would like to mount it over my tv but I can't put it on top. Personally, I think the wall brackets for the vp150 would put it too far behind the tv. Has anyone tried using a small tv wall mount with an adjustable arm to mount their center above the tv? I noticed some can reach up to 26-27 inches from the wall, about right for my tv, and they can be angled, but I am curious how it would look or maybe I am missing a problem I could have. Thanks for the input.

Hi bigsid,

There is no reason the VP150 won't work effectively if it's a couple of feet behind the TV. When you set up the speaker to listener distances in your A/V receiver menu, the circuitry will compensate with appropriate delay, if necessary, for the disparity between your front left and right and center speaker distances.

It may not be ideal in terms of music listening with formats that use the center, but for TV movie and DVD playback, it should be fine. And I agree, it's become a major hassle with large-screen panel and projection TVs that have no shelf or surface on which to place a center channel. I'm currently using a short stand in front of the TV to support the center, which isn't ideal because it blocks the infrared sensors on my A/V receiver.

Acoustically, it's fine but I have to move it off-center somewhat so the remote sensor for the TV and other gear isn't obscured.

That's something I've noticed recently as I've been looking at new tv's. What the heck were these tv manufacturers thinking? I'd be willing to be that at LEAST 50% of their buyers have HT setups. Where do they expect people to put their center channels? Grrrr...

I've seen at a couple places that you can buy a small "shelf" that attaches to the top/back of your tv, so you can place the speaker on top of the set. It's not the prettiest thing, but it would be better than that giant arm you're considering.

Here's one I found.

Spiff, just be sure that your TV can stand the weight. I own a Samsung DLP (HLN model, NOT the newer HLP model), and was considering using one of those, or something like it, until I read that the frames of some Sammys were bowing under the weight of some center channel speakers. The bowing was distorting even the screen. I'm sure there are sets that can hold the weight, just be sure yours can, before you put one up there.

I'll definately check on that before hand. At this point I don't even have a nice new tv yet.

The VP150 is a pretty light (comparatively) center channel. It's also very long, which disperses the weight over a much larger area. That should help as well.

Hang in there. It'll come, in time.

Agreed. I'm still chicken to put mine up there. Wish I could.

if your tv is in an entertainment center, and if you have enough room to squeeze it in above the tv, use an FMB and mount the speaker to the underside of the top of the ent center. i did that with mine. it's just above the plasma, looks great, sounds great, and most of all, the wife likes it there too.

Thanks everyone for the reply, unfortunately my tv isnt in an entertainment center, the top of the tv starts to bow when I put the center speaker there (no support at all), and I have the same problem as Alan when I put the speaker down in front of the tv, it blocks the ifrared sensors, but that is where I currently have it. I will probably go with the fmb for the vp150 and mount on the wall behind the tv unless I can find another option like finding a way to maybe disperse the weight of the vp150 across the top of the tv, the corners seem much stronger than the middle. Thanks again .....

Jack - I have the Samsung HLN4067W and it has a built in shelf on the top (though not as wide as the VP150). I had my VP150 on it for awhile and didn't notice any bowing of the TV cabinet.

I've since moved it to the bottom shelf of the TV stand (I'm using the Samsung stand) with the VP150 flipped so that it is angled upward.

It's out of the way and the wife likes the placement. I haven't noticed any difference in performance vs. the top of the TV.

Thanks Eric. I have my VP150 just under the set, and flipped to angle up, also. Getting it on top of the set would have freed up the shelf space it's occupying, and would have gotten the drivers a little closer to the same level as my M60 tweeters. Where it it is right now actually works just fine, though.
