I am trying to decide between these two subs - the axiom or the HSU. I will be using the home theatre system to watch a crap load of movies, but I am also addicted to music so i'll want really phat bass with good clarity.

Phat? Phat? Hmm... I'll make a generalization here 'cause that's what I do best, but I assume someone looking for phat bass wants the bottom end to completely overpower the mids and highs. He wants to elect Mr. Whoomp over Mr. Mid and Mr. Sizzle. If that's the case, look for something ludicrously huge... like an SVS the size of a small skyscraper - and may the audio gods have mercy on your everlasting soul.

If I've mischaracterized your request and you're looking for good tight bass reproduction to fill in below the useful range of your full range speakers, I'd suggest the Hsu or Axiom 10" drivers (EP175/VTF-2) - 10" drivers are good and punchy (there's a reason good bass guitar cabinets use 10" arrays), although the Axiom products use aluminum woofers which help tighten up the sloppy sound of large drivers (not sure what Hsu and SVS use).

the sub question has been discussed here on several different threads.. if you go into the 'search' part of the message board and put in, 'subs' or 'HSU', you will find more info to investigate than you could possibly imagine.

general idea is that the axiom subs are good, and the HSU's are better.. for the price, i think you would get more bang with the HSU. but, dont forget, depending on your budget, the new axiom 'super' subs are due out in the next few months, and they are supposed to be better than them all.. but price is over $1000...

EDIT- hey bren... welcome back man... nice to see you.. i have missed your dry wit, and senseless humor... not to mention, your expertise..!! stick around a while!!

I'm not to sure what Phat bass is but I would opt for the VTF-3MK2.I have dual Vtf-2's and can say they do perform way above what you think is possible for the money.

I happen to like my SVS which also happens to be the size of a small skyscraper! :-) I like the cylinder design and the engineering reasons for doing it in cylinder form. Hell everyone here always goes on about HSU this and that but did you ever notice when you get in to there line of subs over $1000.00 it goes cylinder? SVS subs do music just fine and dandy. I have no idea how come some people think they don't. Not sure if it matters but the SVS PC-Ultra that I'm running if I'm not mistaken uses a 12" metal woofer.

Hello NeverHappy,

Hope you are well. Yes the PC-Plus and PC-Ultra use aluminum 12" drivers. Your PC-Ultra is better than the Plus line by a hair or two, that is a nice sub.

The SVS PCi line use a paper/kevlar reinforced driver.

Later,

TonyM

I'm sure the Svs subs are great but he only listed the Axiom and Hsu subs there for I thought the VTF-3 would be the better choice of the two.

The more I hear about the VTF-3 the more I want to try one out. I'm sure they are a kickass sub to say the least.

wid, you are right on the money. I tend to jump the gun to a fault and feel the need sometimes to defend SVS just a little!

I don't know why but no one has talked about the Outlaw Audio Sub. Any thoughts. I have one and it is great.

The Outlaw is a nice sub and HSU had a hand in it but I don't think it stacks up to well against the elite stuff from HSU or SVS.
