Hey I just ordered the denon 985s. Question is...... if its the exact same product as the 2805s, why the different name. The cost is also different.
The 985 can be found for around 75.00 less.

i am sure there is some sort of marketing strategy name for it, but it is common. yamaha does it also.. its the same equip, they just give it a different name and different price.

its kinda like the 2805 will be sold at your higher end type stores, where the buyer wants to think he is getting, "the best money can buy", and isnt as concerned with the higher price.. and the 985 is the one sold at the chain stores, where people might be lookin for a bargain. this isnt the best explanation for this, but its the best that i could do..

like i said, i had the same experience when looking for a yamaha receiver. they have the RX-V1000 and 1300 and 1400, etc.. but that also have the HTR-5500 series and the 5600 series.. they are the same receivers, same functions.. different price?? just about the same as the denon lines..

Big John is right. I just recently bought the 2805. I was told the 985 is the exact same receiver just marketed for a different group. I think the salesman used the term "boutique" when he stated where the 985 is sold. Not sure exactly what that means. I went with the 2805 only because I could buy it locally. The 985 can be had for a little less, so I would say go for it if you order online. I think the 2805 is a great receiver.

I already went for it. The 985s should be here in about 5 days. I wanted the 3805, but anywhere there was a deceint price, the wait was going to be a couple of months. I have patience, just not that much patience.
Anyway I got the 985s for around $550.00 after alot of digging.
Of course right after I ordered it I found an Onkyo 801 for 689.00.
OH WELL. I'm sure I'll be happy.

Brady, as I said before, the 985 is exactly the same as the 2805 except for the number, color and price. Denon supplies the 2805 to supposedly higher class(i.e. higher price)"boutique" outfits.

Is there a "non-boutique" (warehouse, street corner, flea market, garage sale even - whatever is cheapest) version of the 3805?

I wished I knew.
Oh, well, no I'm glad i dont know. It would just piss me off if I could find one cheaper (and available) after I've already ordered the 985.

Actually no there isn't. I checked the Denon web site, and the 985 is the top of the line in that line of receivers.
