I just came back from browsing the world cyber games at the SF Civic Center and saw this.
Anyone want to go buy one and tell us how it works?

Bet that costs a fortune.

Hey, what's with the anti-geek slant lately?

Very simple! SoundBlaster Personal Computer Memory Card International Association card! Aka SoundBlaster PC card. Aka sound card for your laptop.

James, since you are the proud father of this thread, I nominate you to buy this card and report back to us all.

The Creative Audigy 2 cards only have a flat frequency response in the 96 KHz 24 bit mode. Under that it's wobbly. How do you make a DAC that has a wobbly frequency response and high frequency distortions in this day and age of audio technology for that price.

I'd recommend people stick to the echo indigo.

Um. Thanks! Sadly, my laptop (what's the technical term).... sucks a$$. It's a p2 400. Putting that card in this laptop would a total waste of time. Of course the laptop was free. So I try not to complain much about it.
Now, if I manage to convince myself I can afford to get a laptop from Alienware or Hypersonic (though I'm also leaning towards a 15in powerbook with the videocard upgrade) I might think about it. But, if I do that then I won't be able to afford the PCMCIA card.

Are there any good USB-connected sound "card"s available ? I know there are a bunch on the market eg a couple from Creative but no idea how they stack up for serious audio use.

The nice thing about a USB-connected card is that you could move it to whatever new computer replaced your... challenged... laptop (mine is 33 MHz, don't feel bad ) even if it were a desktop or something else without PCMCIA.
