I was just in a music store... looking to upgrade my wife's synthesizer to a korg triton studio or a roland famtom, anyways once i told the salesman how i have this stuff hooked up, he went on to tell me how harmful and damaging it is to my axiom speakers, (got it hooked up through my s/baster audigy sound card,(via coax)to the denon avr-4802 and to my vp150, 2 pairs of m80's, 15" klipsh sub and my qs8's.... he went on and told me that the frequency rang was very harmful to the amp & speakers ...i also have a sure mic for karaoke .... so can someone tell me if this is a buch of balony or has some credit to it.... thanks for all responses

Well I had this HK AVR10 and it was working fine until my friend hook it up to his DJ mixing machine. After 4 months of abuse my HK only has one set of listening mode...ie the Video1, Video2, CD all comes out with the same output which is connected to the CD.
My suggestion dont even try to connect any variable unclear inputs to your reciever.

Hi Johnny_Be_Good,

Be very, very careful running musical instruments like synthesizers, solid-body electrics (don't even consider plugging an electric bass into an amp connected to domestic hi-fi speakers) and keyboards into Axiom speakers. With no limiter connected, the sudden transients can damage or burn out a voice coil.

Musical instrument speakers in dedicated guitar amps and instrument amps use heavy-duty components designed to take abuse from bass and treble transients, as well as distortion garbage from electric instruments.

If you're careful with levels, you should be okay, but overall I don't recommend the practice.

Hi, Johnny
I have a set of Roland V Drums (White Shells) with a TD-10 control module and a couple of KC-300 amps. You may have heard someone play these on stage, in a studio, or at the music store. At any rate it sounds like you are familiar with the Roland product line. I have to agree with Alan and the salesman. Axiom, B & W type speakers are not intended for this role. You would do much better with a Roland KC-300 or KC-500. They are made to be used with KORG and Roland keyboards and synthesizers. One other thing, I have a pair of M60s and M22s, I would not push my Rolands thru them.

Hi,

On the face of it, it's not harmful. It's just that you are putting your Axiom speakers into a "sound reinforcement" role that they weren't designed to play. As for the Shure microphone, that's marginal. If you were to roar into the mike doing karaoke, or belt something louder than normal, you might rip out the voice coil in one of the drivers.

Speakers used by touring bands and club owners, as well as those for amplified instruments, are not designed for high fidelity; they are meant to take unending abuse and not have to be repaired or replaced every tour date. It's one of the reasons a lot of club and concert systems sound so lousy but they do stand up to abuse. Years ago, I ran a pickup on a 12-string guitar through a hi-fi amp and damaged one of my speakers. Susequently, I got a dedicated musical instrument amp/speaker and used that for my instruments and mikes.

Great around the house or on a small stage. Don't forget the stands. Try musiciansfriend.com or samash.com for pricing.
