I am looking to add a subwoofer to my partial home theater set- up and am looking for advice on what to get. I have two Kef Q7 floor standing speakers in the front (3 way bass reflex / Frequency response at 15° - 35 Hz - 27 kHz / Crossover frequency - 120 Hz - 27 kHz / Sensitivity (2.83V/1m) - 91 dB / Maximum output - 113 dB / Impedance - 8 Ohms ) with a Kef Q10C for a center channel. My room size is 18 X 15.

I am looking to get a subwoofer that provides deep accurate bass and am willing to compromise on looks. I was thinking on getting the Klipsch RSW-10 but thanks to fellow Axiom members have learnt about some brands like HSU, SVS and Velodyne that might be a better fit for my application.

My front speakers play loud and do provide some good bass but I am looking to add more detail in terms of bass for music and home theater. I listen to music 60 % and HT 40%, so am looking for a Sub that will be good for music and HT.



Here are some questions as I’m utterly confused on which sub to get now:


•Is there a marked difference between the HSU STF-2 and the VTF-2 MK2? I listen to music 60 % and HT 40%, which of the two will fit my need better.

•How do SVS25-31PCi and PB10-ISD compare to HSU STF-2 & VTF-2 MK2? I did notice that SVS PB10-ISD goes down all the way to 18hz?


•How do the Velodyne CHT-12R and CHT-15R compare to the HSU and SVS models listed above? Where can I find Velodyne subs on the web as Circuit City doesn’t sell the CHT range anymore?

Also a un-related question but what is the process of supporting two Subs:

•Is it done by using a Y cable to split the signal from the receiver to drive two Subs. In this case do both Subs get ample signal.

I think Velodyne's CHT line has been discontinued (if I'm wrong, someone please correct me!). The CHT-R is a different line (230V only!). I believe the CHT line is being replaced with the DLS-R line (DLS-R and CHT-R are the same sub, except DLS-R line is 117V). Personally, I own Velo's DPS-12...similar to the DLS-R, but no remote and a few less features (crossover and phase options).

I don't think you can go wrong with either the HSU or SVS subs. Those were my first choice, but being in Canada led me to find something I could find locally (taxes, warranty support, etc.). And I got my Velo for a sweet deal!! And I am very happy with it.

If you can find a Velo CHT, you can probably get a great deal on it.

I had a CHT10 subwimper and currently use an SVS 20-39 PCi - NO contest.

I am using a HSU VTF-2 and blows away my old Velodyne 15".
SVS will probably be the next subwoofer I purchase.

I have the Hsu Stf-3.I was using 2 Vtf-2s.I like the Stf-3 more than running the dual Vtf-2s.

between the two HSU I would prefer the VTF2.

25-31pci is comparable to the PB12-ISD, but PB10 is the best bang for buck and is very close to those bigger brothers minus the built-in xover and some speaker level I/O, all of the above SVS will blow away the STF2 and VTF2.

forget about the Velodyne, better off with HSU or something else.

depends on the sub you get, for twin setup, you can either use Y adapter, or daisy chain them(such as the SVS and HSU) If you're looking for something to shake down the house for under $900, get two PB10, more than enough for 18 x 15.

I am also a newbie and I am trying to assemble a reasonable home theater system. With all of the postings re. Axiom I am leaning to get a complete set from them. THis is the package I am looking at:

M22ti - fronts
VP150 - center
Outlet QS8 - rears
Epicenter500 - sub

I have two questions. If I choose to get the set listed above am I better off with a Velodyne SPL-1200 Series II instead of the Axiom EP500?

Second, the sales guy at the Good Guys, insisted that I get some Monitor English brand which sounded REALLY good.

Any comments/feedback is greatly appreciated!

The EP500 would be a good choice. Also, look at the info relative to SVS and HSU. Not sure what to tell you relative to Good Guys and the brand they quoted. The three subs/companies mentioned above put you in a position of not making a mistake and all three have proven to be excellent rather than really good.
