Calm down. Some TV's have degauss function when turned on. Make sure you remove the source of the problem (keep those unshielded speakers at least 2 ft away from the TV). Unless it created a permanent damage the purple spot should go away in time. I read in a different forum before that it took 2 weeks before the color distortion went away. The normal turning off and on took care of the problem.

The best thing you can do, if the spot doesn't go away, is bring it to a service center. Sure, you might pay 100$ or 2, but at least you will get it fixed, if they can do it.

My friends' TV became discolored by a clock radio, but he had it fixed at a service center for aobut 120$ or so. I can't remember the exact price.

I've worked on computer monitors before - and the concept is very similar as with a TV.

Like an earlier poster said, your TV might have a degauss function built in. If they don't, you could look around to buy a degaussing wand. That's all a repair shop is going to do with it anyway is wave a degaussing wand over it... because if the tube has been overly magnified, the only option then is to replace the tube.

Those wands might be pricey, I just don't know... but I thought this might help...

As per the previous responses, nor worries mate.. Just go down to any local discount electrical shop and pick up a degausser.. I just called, and price is 50 bucks (U.S) average.. They are a round band of wire, about 12 in diameter, that plugs into household current via a typical lampcord type extension..
It really takes no great skill to work the magic.. Just follow the simple directions, or ask the tech at the store at time of purchase.. If memory services, you hold it close to the t/v tube, flick the power on, and begin making a 360 circular motion around the face of the tube, while at the same time slowy backing the coil (degausser) away from the tube.. Believe you do this once or twice and it should be fine..
You can do the same thing with a big magnet (speaker), and save the 50 bucks.. It does the same thing, just not as refined.. Be careful though if the set is expensive.. Might want to stick with the real McCoy.. As it does take just a bit of practice with a magnet.. My dad was a t/v repair man back in the 60's (my age showing ?).. My brother and I got to play around with all sorts of stuff like that..

LFE ! The rest is just details..

Adam, as Ed(pinoy) pointed out, your set probably has a built-in degaussing arrangement. Turn it on for a minute or two and then off for a half hour or so. Do this repeatedly. If this doesn't reduce and then eliminate the problem, manual degaussing will have to be done.

Thank you very much! I followed the cheapest intructions first and it seems to have been solved just by turning it on then leaving it for a bit then repeating. I almost flipped a kidney!

I'm glad you solved your problem. I wanted to add a further note.

My Toshiba television had specific degaussing instructions that included unplugging the set, then reconnecting the TV. Upon power-up the set would then degauss the tube coils.

I've tried that on several brands and it worked on those as well!

$120?! For 2 minutes of work and some coiled lamp cord? Man I'm in the wrong business, I thought computers was where the money was at.

I guess P.T. Barnum was right...
