Its starting to get into the low 60's at night. pretty cool when you have that mountain breeze coming down the mountain all night.

It even snowed last week, but most of it had melted by the next day.

It was 16 this morning when this thread started. Now, at 10:45 AM local time, it's warmed up to a balmy 18 degrees.

It's supposed to be +9 to -9 statewide tonight in New Hampshire....probably -2 or so in my little valley....

Maybe if you crank up your Axiom's enough, your speaker wires will warm up and you can use them as Floor Radiant Heating

It's a balmy 32 up here in the geat white north, Calgary, Alberta. That's slightly above normal for this time of year. You get used to it after awhile. Just makes getting a good HT seem that much more important for winter.

I did see the sun today, though, which was nice. That whole "pitch black by 4:30 in the afternoon" thing harshes my mellow.

Well, It's made it all the way up to 28 now. BUT! The good (and unusual for this time of year) thing is that we have a beautiful, bright, sunny day. I even had to run a few quick errands and found it quite comfortable because of the warmth of the sun. I'm actually cheery, today.

(Don't try to take advantage of my good nature, though, or I'll revert to my normal state )

weather.com tells me that it's 61 here in Berkeley, CA. Partly cloudy, winds from the NW at 5mph, and a visibility of 10 miles. Looking out from my 11th floor office window, I can actually see twice that far.

I never minded winter so much.

We're at 35 degrees down here in Atlanta.....supposed to hit low 20s tonight. Coming from New England, I don't mind the cold as much. It beats the sweltering 100% humidity days of summer.

18 last night, wind chill down around 0. I left a case of bottled water out on the front porch and every bottle froze solid.

Time to think about moving the Home Theater indoors for the winter

And Mark. I'm supposed to feel sorry for you cuz ya gotta cut the lawn? Come over here and shovel the 6 inches of snow outa my driveway, and I'll feel sorry for ya.

Speaking of dry. One of the drawbacks of being in a cold climate, other than the obvious, is having forced air heat. It does keep you warm, but, the humidity in my home has been around 28% for the last week, and my nose is so sore from the dry air. Time to get the humidifier out, I guess.

You don't know PAIN until you've driven in Southern California in the rain. Any rain. People haven't a clue how to deal with it.

I lived in Seal Beach (suburb of L.A.) for awhile, and you're absolutely corect. In their defense, they go a long time between serious rains, and there is a buildup of oil and other goodies on the roads. Add a little water and it really does get slippery. We who are used to driving on slippery roads know how to handle it. But, the natives, who don't, just go slippin' 'n' slidin' 'n' crashin'.

Try driving in Dallas ANY TIME. I swear there are WAAAYYY too many Californians living here.

That was actually quite unfair of me. In the Bay Area, people can't drive in the rain, either, for some bizarre reason. Hmm...Scratch that. In the Bay Area, people can't drive.

I lived most of my life in Maine and New Hampshire, so I know cruddy weather. (and don't miss it one bit!)

It is true that since there pretty much isn't any weather in SoCal, the locals here don't know what to do when the rare raindrop hits the ground. I've been on the 405 freeway in a downpour so bad you could hardly see, while most of the traffic flew past me going full 70mph+ freeway speeds. Idiots. Roger was driving, and until I told him to slow down, or let me out of the car, he was one of those idiots. Born and raised in West LA...what are you gonna do?

Oh, right, I should add the disclaimer that I was born and raised in SoCal, and now live in the Bay Area. And I drive all the freakin' time, so I'm sure I'm a crappy driver.

32 now in PA. I'm just getting excited looking ahead at the forecast for Monday though. Weather.com says snow! First one of the year.

It actually got up to 38 on 12/15 in Minnesota. I saw my neighbor out planting some orange trees, NOT. Today it has actually cooled off, quite nicely. So much for the beach babes.

I read a statistic once that said every year during the Rose Parade, 20,000 people decide to move to California.

When my boy is of driving age, we're going to head out into the dirt so he can get some practice at sliding cars around. Worked for me.

jack, just have a humidifier installed on your heating system. there are many on the market, and they do the job of raising the comfort level and humidity.

FYI....the rain-driving paralysis is rampant down here in Georgia, as well. Growing up in New Hampshire, I am well used to having my car go into a snow slide without any major panic. So, the rain to me is nothing more than a hindrance. Unless it's a full downpour that effects visibility, there's no real reason to slow that much when you're on a highway....it's not ice. But, the second a raindrop hits the windshield, you can expect the traffic to drop by at least 10-20 mph and the few stray fools to kick on their hazards....never quite understood the hazards thing.

BTW....still hovering at freezing. However, we're actually set to hit the 50's during the day over the next couple of days....wooohoooo!!!!

Mark, Great idea about sliding the boy around on dirt. You really want to teach him? Bring him to Cleveland for the winter.

Dan, Thank you for the suggestion, but I rent, and don't want to give my landlord a free humidifier. What do those things cost? I've got a portable Vornado, that does a pretty good job. I've just been too damn lazy to haul it out. I hate changing the filters.

We had our first big time snowfall about a week ago. The weather folks had been predicting the storm for 3 or 4 days, but strangely, the road crews were uncharacteristically missing in action. Usually, with that much notice, they're right on top of things. Not this time. I had to run of couple of errands in the middle of the storm, and not only had the roads NOT been treated, but I didn't see one plow or salt truck until the next day. Needless to say, the roads were pretty treacherous.

Now, that combination (first snowfall, and sleeping road crews) usually can lead to some real problems while people try to remember how to drive in conditions like that, and I later did hear of a number of the standard fender benders.

But, on my errands, everybody really had their act together. All of us cut our speed to a reasonable level without creeping at 10 miles per hour. I made my journey, and returned with no problems. Usually you have at least a few idiots (like me) who can't initially adjust to having a 10 minute trip take 20 minutes, so they get into trouble. Even I was calm, cool, and collected. I was VERY impressed (and surprised).

Umm...Hydroplaning.

Note rule #1.

Hydroplaning can be fun when you're the only one on the road.

While driving back from Tahoe a couple weeks ago, my right front tire hit a patch of black ice on the highway while going around a gradual left turn. We were gonig about 50 and the front of the car suddenly shifted a couple feet to the right, but since the car is FWD, I didn't need to do any corrective action -- my tires were still pointing where I wanted to go.

It was one of those moments that's a lot scarier the more you think about what could have happened.

same thing happened to us in my wife's new AWD truck. i was driving, and hit a water spot, and felt a momentary hydroplane. and at the same moment, i felt the AWD kick in, and the other wheels seemed to pick up and correct it for me.. it was a weird feeling. glad to know its capabilities.

I grew up and learned to drive in Pittsburgh (bad traffic, lotsa steep hills/winding roads and snow), moved to Detroit and its snow & traffic (don't ask) and have been in Rochester NY for 23 years (we're talking SNOW here). I feel pretty good about my abilities in slick & slippy and have never really had a problem. Mostly because of the constant practice I guess. Also, all of those places expect snow, they get it and they are prepared to deal with it.

The most terrifying experiences I have had behind a steering wheel is when I am in someplace like Charlotte and 1/2" of snow falls. I learned VERY quickly to get off the road when something like this happens. Not worried about myself, but rather the remainder of all of the people in cars around me.

Their eyes go to triple size (not unlike Mark ), their common sense muscle shuts down, panic is on their breath and ALL OF THEM think the way to deal with it is to drive fast & take chances. You can actually hear all of their hearts beating at 3X normal. It's frightening.

Based on my vast vehicular expertise, the last thing I told my daughter (who I tortured for hours by making her slide around in a mall parking lot to learn to control the car) as she pulled out of our driveway on the way to her new home in DC was to stay off the road when it even LOOKS like it might snow. To her credit, she remembered that advice and has thanked me for it. She has lived there for 4 years now and still marvels at the way a city that size can break into a spontaneous city-wide game of bumper cars when somebody even just whispers the word "snow" under their breath.

Now I find a new threat. The old "rain brings oil" thing. Is there nowhere safe anymore?

That's good to know about the new AWD vehicles. I figured all that stuff to be merely marketing hype.

Maybe all the snake-oil audio vultures have made me overly cynical?

In my personal experience w/ hydroplaning, most instances resolve themselves almost immediately, as long as the driver doesn't freak out and try to over-compensate. You're driving a very heavy vehicle that wants to be on the ground. If you lose that traction, take the foot off the gas and don't slam on the breaks. The car will get it's traction back. Again, it's when the people around you spaz out and slam the breaks or jerk the wheel real quickly that the problems arise.

I could be completely wrong about this, but it seems to me that every time that I hydroplane it seems to resolve when I let off the gas and simply control the wheel, not overadjust.....Who knows, maybe I've just been lucky.

Now, when it comes to ice or black ice, I have to surrender to the powers that be. Even with experience, you're really just not going to stop a car that's gone into a solid slide on ice. Small patches are one thing, but heaving coverings are another thing. I had seen plenty of cars slide out up in the North in the snow, but that's nothing compared to what I've seen down here w/ the ice storms. The cars really can't correct once they're in a good slide...you just have to bend over and kiss it good-bye. Each year we get to see footage of transit buses sliding into cars and the like. It make for good TV....as long as you're not the one inside.

During our most recent El Nino I watched an SUV with oversized tires hydroplane right across two lanes and onto the shoulder of the 57. He turned his tires carefully this and way and that, but it didn't affect the direction his car was going! There was about 4-6" of standing water on the 57 at that time.

Yes...letting off the gas will usually correct it...but why not slow down so it never happens in the first place? Just a thought.

I was heading north on the 5 just as you enter the San Jacquin valley. The sky just completely opened up. I've never in my life seen rain like that before. Being as we were in SoCal, cars and trucks were flying past us. I slowed down to about 30mph...then finally simply pulled over. You just plain couldn't see well enough. Within 5 minutes the rain stopped and I started on my way again. In less than a one mile stretch I counted 11 cars and trucks off the road in the ditch. I waved at some as I drive by with a big smile on my face.

That reminds me. Why is it that "The 5" out in Cali is the only road I know of in the US that isn't just called by it's number. Around here, we would say get on 95S (one of our main highways), not The 95S. I was in San Diego back in February and thought this was kind of odd. Didn't know if there was a reason, or if it was just one of those things that people started saying it that way, so now everyone says it that way.

Ah! This is actually a subject I'm perversely interested in. It's only "the 5" in Southern California, where most freeways are commonly referred to as "the #" In Northern California, it's "5" and all freeways are referred to as "#". Hence, "the 405" and "580."

One theory on that I've come up with is that out here in Cali, they call them "freeways". Where back East we always called them Interstates.

The word "interstate" always came first, and we'd often shorten "Interstate 95" to "I95".

Out here the use of the word "freeway" comes second. For example, "The 405 freeway". It gets shortened to "the 405".

Just my theory...and as you can tell, I've spent far too much time wondering about it myself.

I think that makes perfect sense, Craig, and I suspect you're absolutely right. "The 405 freeway" would logically get shortened to "the 405." "Interstate 95" would logically get shortened to "I95," then ultimately to just "95."

Here in Cleveland, we mostly just use the number, or the number with "I" in front of it. " If you're coming in on I90, take it to 271, go to I480, then get off 480 at Clague, etc."

Being a speech major in college, I love, and am fascinated by, the diversity of terms used around the country. I enjoy learning what areas of the country call it "pop," and what areas call it "soda." And will those of you in the Northeast please clarify what a "frappe" is? I can't remember if it's what we here in the Midwest call a "soda" or a "milkshake, or a "malted."

Who, here, has NEVER heard the term "tree lawn"? Those who have may say so, but please don't reveal what it is. I'm curious to see how widespread, or narrow, the usage of a term like that is.

And while I'm asking questions, would somebody explain to me how Cleveland, which is 500 miles from New York City, and 2500 miles from San Francisco is included in the "Midwest"? Just guessing, I'd suspect the term started back when anything West of the Mississippi was considered "the West."

I have never heard of a tree lawn. (born and raised in Southern California, now live in the Bay Area (not technically Northern California, at least if you ask those folks in Redding.))

I call soda soda, but usually I refer to it by brand name; eg, if I want a Coca-Cola, I'll ask for a Coke. Brand names are NOT interchangeable. If I feel the beverage is, I'll ask for the type of soda; eg a lemon-lime soda. Not that I would ever ask for one of those foul things.

On the West thing, I've noticed it most in country songs, where they talk about going "out west" incessantly. They seem to consider Texas out west, because let me tell you, San Francisco has no "wide open spaces." (yes, I'll admit it, I have grown to like the Dixie Chicks, although I can't stand most other country music, except the real stuff.)

I thought the 7F with wind chill of -16 was bad last night. The dog seemed to like it though. He had never seen snow, which we got not even an inch of, but he must like it. A couple of times he just wanted to stop walking and either sit or lay down in it.

Oh sure! Rub it in, Wayne! Every winter, the local weather man seems to take great pride in reporting that the Southern and Eastern shores of the Great Lakes is only one of 4 places on Earth that has lake effect snow. My urge to reach through the screen and strangle him is almost irresistible. I can only remember 2 of the other 3, the Great Salt Lake area, and Lake Baikal in Russia.

Yesterday, the ice on the ground was softening. Today's high will be 0, the wind chill is -24. Wind gusts up to 45 mph. Just another average spring day in the frozen wasteland.

So about that treelawn thing, is it the strip of grass between the street and the sidewalk that sometimes has trees planted in it?

There is an asterisk on Jack's map indicating 207" per year of snow. This is caused by some really intense lake effect snow off Lake Ontario. At times, they have seen 3"-5" per hour. In this general area is a little place named Tug Hill (No, not named after Mr. Faith Hill ).

Anyhow, there are a couple of bars that cater specifically to snow mobilers and the occasional hearty cross-country skier and/or snow shoe-er. These are the ONLY ways to reach these places in the winter and there are NO roads to get there in the summer. They are provisioned by snow mobile as well.

Tug Hill has not yet made my list of "1,000 Favorite Places I'd Like To Be". I don't believe it ever will. I know a bunch of you lunatics like to slide down steep snowy hills, but this makes little sense to me.

i figure since this is becoming our 'Axiom Weather Page', i just have to mention this.

ITS SNOWING!!! no lie, i $hit you not.. its very light, and it is REALLY trying to stick. we had a thunder storm move through late last night, which is weird, cause it rarely ever thunders this late in the year. anyway, i guess the moisture in tha air, along with dropping temps, has caused our white winter surprise. dont know how long its gonna last, but it sure is pretty to look at.

FYI, it was -33 Celsius (-27 F)last night. We are a balmy -22(-8 F) right now. Just trying to decide if I should bother shoveling the snow off the driveway.
