Hello All- Many questions about setting these speakers w/my receivers setup. If I have a Yamaha Rxv2400 w 5.1 setup containing this setup and a subwoofer, should I set the fronts to small or large? How does this affect the crossover?

What crossover would you use?

LFE to "SUB" or "BOTH"???

If I set them to "small", does this affect the sound in 2 channel stereo using the Direct Stereo (no sub) mode on the Yamaha? Am I loosing range of signal by having them as small?

I love this receiver but the bass management is making my head spin and I would love to know how to set it correctly when I buy the Axiom's. I know this is many questions, but I'm hoping someone else has this setup and can point me to the sweet spot for optimal listening. Thanks in advance

The general convention is to set all speakers to small and set the sub at 80 for the crossover. You can tweak the crossover to personal preference. You don't lose any LFE or signal, the sub simply does the heavy lifting. Plug it into "SUB".

As far as "Direct Stereo" is concerned, it varies by model & manufacturer. For my Denon 3803, "Pure Direct" is the stereo mode and it shuts down everything, including the sub, except for the two fronts.

Sounds like it might be worthwhile to crack your receiver manual & see if there is some specific info related to your questions.

Ray3,

I too have a Denon 3803 and I think you will find that the sub is still active in Pure Direct Stereo mode even if you have your mains set to large and crossover set to LFE only. Try touching your sub driver in this mode to see if it is in the loop. The manual says that this is not the case but I know my sub is on even in Pure Direct with my mains set to small and crossed over at 60Hz.

You are correct Stuart, the sub is on but doesn't emit any LFE , all is channelled to the fronts. There is another stereo mode on the 3803 that does use the sub (just can't recall what it is). in combination with the fronts.

I have the rxv-1500, it can be a very challanging menu set-up, only cause there are son many options. When you go to "pure direct" mode, it enables the sub still, unless you have not defined the initial set-up as having a sub. Done under the "manual" then "basic" set-up sub woofer - YES (or) NO?

you can also specify not to have the sub, in "pure direct" mode in the advanced set-up. Assuming your 2400 is the same as the 1500, they are almost identical receivers. I personaly have mains, which are 60s set to large, all others set to small, sub crossed at 80, it vairies in 10hz increments. But this would change in a room to room basis. You will cuss all the otions, but later be glad they are there when you get more familiar with em. For what it's worth, it took me quite awhile.

darth, conventional wisdom is to set your mains to small, but I don't. For music it is just not very good, IMO. I run the mains large and everything else small with good results for HT. OTOH, I did feel compelled to add an external 2 channel amp to help relieve the load from my Denon 2802.

Ray3,

I will double check tonight, but I am pretty sure that I am getting sub output in Pure Direct.

On Denons you would get sub output in direct mode but not pure direct.

Just checked all of my settings and ran a test - my sub is pounding away in Pure Direct mode. If you go through the manual speaker level adjustments in Pure Direct the sub is also one of the available channels.
I re-checked the manual and there it is - you have to manually set the sub to off in the speaker setup for Pure Direct to operate as Ray3 commented. i.e. if sub is set to on then Pure Direct DOES NOT bypass the digital bass management circuit (Page 50 of manual).
I must admit I was also under the impression that Pure Direct mode did more than this.

DK, set YPAO to skip size and crossover and manually set at small and 80Hz(if you set large there would be no crossover and the speakers would run full-range). Run YPAO. If you use "small", the LFE setting is a moot point; it only applies when mains are set "large". It should then be set "sub", rather than "both" since "both" duplicates main channel bass in the sub, in general a bad idea.
