I would like to send music stored on my hard drive along with my Rhapsody selection from my computer to my stereo. I do not have a wireless setup but I do have an old cable coaxial connection in the computer room that terminates close to the stereo. Is there any way to go from the computer line out mini-plug to coaxial and from coaxial to RCA for input into my receiver?
I stopped at radio shack today and they did not know of anything that would work. Another stereo store thought that it was possible but did not have any parts that could be used to convert the signals.
Is this even possible?

Coax is for a digital signal, if you are using an Audigy 2 sound card or something similar with a digital output then the answer is yes. This is how I have mine set up. It comes out of the Audigy 2's digital output to a 1/8" mini to rca adapter (mono adapter) to the coax then it goes into my HK's coax input.

This has worked out great as I built my home theater pc specifically to play my huge library of mp3’s (of course surfing the web on a 50” screen is pretty awesome too).

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Drift - Coax will also carry an analog signal....just think about your old cable signal before digital cable. This being the case, Glacier should still be able to achieve what he's looking for.

Glacier - There are adapers out there that convert from coaxial to rca (coax). Radio Shack should have them. If not, you can get them on the net (Parts Express for example). That is the only way I know to join coax and rca. The problem is that it's only going to carry one of your two chanels of material, unless you have two coax runs.

An alternative would be to use an modulator to scoop up both channels and insert them onto the coax line.

In the end, you might just want to find a sound card w/ a digital coaxial output, as Drift suggested. Then, it's just a simple conversion using the above adapter and no mini/rca conversion. If it's an issue, I'm sure you can find one that's affordable.

Good Luck

Your digital coax input on your receiver wont read an anlog signal if remember correctly, be it mono or otherwise.

For about $20 Blue Jeans Cable will make you a nice mini-plug to RCA 75ohm, "digital" cable. It's not listed on their site, but I just emailed them this week about this very issue. Drop them an email, they'll be able to hook you up.

I think he's looking to do analog out of his existing card. He'd have to terminate two cables onto the RCAs. Sounds like a darn good reason to upgrade sound cards to digital.
