I have a quick non-speaker question. We just bought my in-laws a new DVD player. They have a TV/VCR combo that has a composite input, but direct connection to the player results in that irritating Macrovision effect. While that generally means I need to pick up an RF modulator, they use an old Dolby Surround receiver that will video-switch. Can I get away with simple video-switching to get around the Macrovision effect, or will I need the modulator regardless?

Is there a way to disable the TV's VCR section? The MPAA has attempted to prevent you from recording movies, as you clearly know. If you run it through the receiver, I doubt that will change, but it's worth a try of course.

Make sure you send a hateful letter to the MPAA as well.

We just tried both methods of getting the player working (through the receiver, using the RF modulator). Neither bypassed the Macrovision.

The nasty letter to the MPAA is easily the best suggestion I've heard, however.

That's absolutely obnoxious.

I've already begun my boycott of the RIAA. Looks like I'll have to add the MPAA, too.
