Hi All,
I just purchased a pair of M60's and have narrowed my receiver choices to the Denon 3805, Yamaha RXV 2500 and the Marantz SV 7500. Music will be my primary focus initially, but I am planning on getting much more involved with HT. I listen to a lot of late 60s music: Dylan, Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, Temps, Smokey, Beatles, Stones, etc. I'm a novice with higher end equipment and would like to keep my receiver budget at $800-1200. Suggestions, please!!
Thanks

For that budget, look at Denon, HK, Yamaha, Onkyo. Pick the features you like and order with confidence. You can't make a mistake with these choices in that price range. I favor the Denon 3805 and several others will chime in soon with suggestions based on their experience with some of the others listed. Your choice will really boil down to personal preference.

Dylan and my Denon 2805 are like a rolling stone, should be the same with a 3805.

peace out

Depending on the size of your room you might consider the Denon 2805 or Yamaha RX-V1500. My room is 20 x 15 x 8 and the RX-V 2500 will blow you out of it with 4 ohm Axiom M80s
The Remote control on the 3805, for me with not great eyesight, is very hard to see except in bright light

My vote goes to the Marantz. I briefly had an 8400 and fell in love with the sound when paired w/ my 60s. I will be getting the 5500 in the near future. If you want to save a little $, consider the 5500 instead of the 7500. There are only some subtle differences in specs, but the major functionalities are the same.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your input. After much research and an effort to keep my eye on future configurations for HT and multi-room uasage, I have decided to go with the Denon 3805. I notice that this unit is not THX certified. How important will that be to a novice just starting out in HT? With all the features that the 3805 offers, it seems like the video capabilities should be of the highest quality. So what is the deal with THX?

My take on the THX approval is that it's like the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval": It means that some organization is putting their stamp of approval on a product, but it doesn't mean that there aren't many other products worthy of consideration as well. Some also feel that the THX certification doesn't mean what it once did, when only the highest levels of performance were "certified". Now, they have lower-quality levels that many, many products out there meet. It kind of diluted the "approval".

I have a 3805 and absolutely love it.... no complaints at all, and it's just big / heavy enough to offer that ....Hmmmm, Jack told me it's not "pride of ownership", but something else.... Jack?

The other thing about THX approval is that the manufacturer has to pay for it.

the 3805 is a great unit.. dont stress the THX.. it is a marketing ploy. just something to catch the eyes of 'window' shoppers.

have confidence in your purchase.. ya done good!!

If I remember correctly I said "I know what you mean by 'Pride of ownership.' I tend to express it as 'pleasure of ownership' just to avoid the possibility of others interpreting it as snobbery."

(Man! I love the search function. It makes me look like I actually REMEMBER saying this. )
